Have you looked at the Lelit Combi?

    Welcome Kristy,

Cuppacoffee sell the Lelit too. If you found milk texture difficult with the Silvia, not much will change with the Lelit and many (most?) of the appliance machines will be worse again. Some quality training will overcome this problem as both machines do this quite well.

    Good luck

Re: Breville Fresca BES860 Extraction Temperature

    Hello

I am looking to purchase a Breville Fresca in the next week or so, however I would like some information from the pros on the extraction temperature of the machine. I cant seem to find any info on it on the net or Breville site.

I hope I dont offend all the Silvia lovers, but we have just sold ours after 1 1/2yrs, for a number of reasons. We dont have the bench space to buy the grinder, our good friend has the fresca and the coffee is cafe quality, we could never get the milk perfect with the Silvia ie it kept separating, and we know the fresh good quality beans are the answer for great coffee.

The guy that bought our machine is a coffee guru, he was going to add a PID to our machine, and that got me thinking about the temperature control for the Breville Fresca.

    Would love some help here.

PS I am a first time blogger, and I love the site, thanks.

    Kristy

    Am I dosing too much?
Tricky to tell from a question on a web site but if the grind is course then too much coffee might be the problem.

What do the grinds feel like rubbed between your fingers? Should be something akin to fine salt and pepper.

Leave it on the coarse grind setting and try it with a level basket

Sounds like you need an under extracted shot to work back from.

I have tried the coursest grind and a stupidly light tamp.... still over extracting. Am I dosing too much? Feel like Ive taken 2 steps forward and 5 backwards. I also think the tamp that comes with the BES860 is terrible.

I have followed this advice to the letter and the guage still goes way up outside the range and the pour is very dark.... I really want to make the unpressurised basket work for me!
    You need a coarser grind.
...then try the same routine again.

(Try and keep all the other variables the same and only change the grind).

Re: Breville Fresca BES860 Erratic Pour

For my morning mug of coffee this is what works for me. For beans I get Harris black label dark roast from the, shock horror, supermarket! So Im in no way a true coffee snob!
    On the BES860:
Use the two cup single wall filter.
Grind dial to 10 +- depends on beans.
Grind amount dial at 5 o’clock
    Filter size – single
    Firmish tamp
Push double cup & do your milk thing.
    Hope this helps.

Using the double basket, i set my grind between 8 (average beans) to 12 (roasted 4-7 days ago). Remember this is just a guide as different beans yeild different results.
With the amount, you have to pile the coffee up pretty high, then press down with your fingers (overlapping the filter basket, so its flat... if that makes sense), then i manually add a tiny bit more coffee by holding the group handle in for a couple of seconds.
The reason for this is i cant get all the coffee needed in one grind as it will just pile up and fall off. I have the dose set at 45 degrees btw.

I then tamp lightly, tap the side with the tamper 3 or 4 times, then tamp quite firmly and give the tamper a spin. The tamper should sit so that the stainless steel part of it cant be seen, but no lower.

WTFUTA "Way better having stale and dry coffee"
All a bit late now, but for the record, I failed to type the word "than".

So, I should of wrote "Way better than having stale and dry coffee"

    Sorry for the confusion.

Re: Breville Fresca BES860 Erratic Pour

Hey mate, just thought id chuck my 2c in as i have had this machine for 6 months as well and have pretty much only used the normal baskets (except for once or twice for testing purposes).

First, dont bother with the single basket... you cant get a good cup out of it. Ive tried many many times.

When i pull the shot it usually gets to about 3/4 pressure, and i can get around 1cm+ of crema with really fresh beans... and slightly less as they age.

I can notice changing the grind higher by even 1 level will cause more pressure. So if this isnt happening with fresh beans... i would say its time to get it checked out :-[

    hope this helps.

Thanks for your offer TG. Ive moved. Maybe see you when Im up.

AM take is easy. I still get a good pour, its just that I have to really work it. Two weeks is about right. If I can get a good pour from Woolies Beans than Im doing alright in terms of technique.

Check you tamp? Should be identical every time yeah? The only thing that should change is the grind.

Thunder, can you really get your coffee to last more than 7 days?
Im currently finishing off some Kimel I roasted 30/12/09; that makes it 14 days today.
Over the last week its been tasting better than it did when I tasted it around day 4.

Its my first KKTO roast and even though it looked good Id wondered if I stuffed it somehow.
I havent roasted for quite some time since the corretto died; I thought Id lost it.

Im also about to crack open another bag of coffee from Supreme Roasters that Roger so kindly sent me.
They were roasted 02/01/10 but Im not worried about them.

BeanMonkey you might need to pay me a visit before you move.

I know Im in trouble to get a decent pour after 7 days. People often talk about having coffee too fresh.  Way better having stale and dry coffee.
WTFUTA "Way better having stale and dry coffee" :-?

Most of my coffee is lucky to last 2 weeks from roast date..

1: First 4 - 7 days it usually de gasses in teh one way valves

2: Then it gets used... Note: Grind does have to be managed as even over the last 5 days it changes...

3: On occasion... I have been caught where I roast in the evening and start using the next afternoon... Change the grind setting and just accept the fresh / raw flavours... Over a week t changes and usually I get to day 5 or 7 and GO that is getting to be a good roast... Opps... Have run out already..

A mate of mine... changes his grinder settings on average about 4 times during the day... When it is hot and humid... Winter... maybe two times... As he also says... It depends on the beans...

I know Im in trouble to get a decent pour after 7 days
Look at your Grind and tamp ... then look again at ya grind and tamp...

2 + 2 = 5 (good coffee) people keep forgetting that 2 + 2 does not equal 4 if we are talking about coffee.
