Re: Silvia competitor? Introducing GEE Espresso

So its been a couple of years, has this machine lived up to the hype? Im looking to make my first step with regards to espresso machines after using french press and stovetop for the past year or so. Is this still a good buy or is there something else on the market which would be a better fit. I rarely make milk based drinks and have about one coffee in the morning and Im the only drinker in the house so I wouldnt need to pull a lot of shots in succession.

Worrying thing is that compared to the Silvia the resale value seems pretty bad, I just saw one sell second hand for $310 so if I dont get along with the machine I guess there is going to be a big loss on resell. Whereas in comparison the Silvia seems to have less depreciation. I know that this shouldnt be a big factor but it is worrying when you are on a limited budget.

One other observation, and I dont know if this is how PID machines normally operate or not, but when I start to brew, the temperature is at 93C. By the time a double shot has been brewed (about 25 seconds), the temperature is down to somewhere between 77 - 81 according to the reading displayed on the panel. My impression is that PID machines are supposed to keep the temperature more constant (closer to the 93 that I had set it to). On the other hand, I know the PID is just a regulator and its up to the heating element to maintain the temperature. Nevertheless, I just thought Id mention this temperature fluctuation that I have observed.

    Good review.

This is normal for a boiler: PID controlled or thermostat.
As the shot flows, the boiler refills with cold water.

At thermostat controlled boiler has wide temperature deadband, so you need to temp-surf before you pull the shot to get the right brew temperature.
A PID, will give you a "ready to brew" temperature, with the benefit of it being settable.

12 degrees is huge. Something is definitely amiss.

I returned my gee today for repairs. As Terry pointed out after a shot the tempreture would usually go down 12 or so degrees. Mine now doesnt change tempreture even after a few consecutive extractions. It also has started to make a strange sound when extracting.
The steam issue has gotten alot worse since my last post to the point in which I have to wait for about 10 seconds for it to stop spraying water n start producing any steam. It literally creates a puddle on d ground and I always warm up my machine well. I was told its an inherent characteristic with thermoblocks but the problem didnt exist in the first few weeks of operating the machine which I find bizzare.
    Will update with developments.

    Supreme Roasters Gee Demo Model

Supreme Roasters is proud to announce we are now selling, demoing, support and stock the Gee Espresso Machine.

For all QLD snobs we have a demo model for testing and review at our Yatala showroom. We also have a PID opv adjusted Silvia on the bench for side by side comparison.

Initial testing, comparison, review and blind tasting has shown that the GEE is a machine with great functionality at a great price point.

Feel free to call us to make a time to play with the GEE!

I ended up buying the machine and have had it for just over a month now. I can relate to some of the issues Terry has outlined (wet steam at times and fluctuations in temperature after extraction). The most frustrating is the wet steam. I too warm the machine adequately but experience the problem. It isnt consistent and so far infrequent but does become frustrating when it occurs.
To its credit, the machine does produce good coffee and I am thus far pleased with the machine and consider it a worthwhile purchase. Will update again after further use.
Must thank Dennis from Cuppacoffee for the great service when making the purchase.

Thank-you! Very reassuring review - Im picking one up from CosmoreX (plus a Rocky) tomorrow.

My training is scheduled for 19 October, but your experience will help inform my experimentation until then.

And yes, the name is a bit of a worry. Maybe Ill stick a k on the end. That works for me!

    Hi Daniel,

Dennis has one on the Cuppacoffee bench...

Might be worth a drive for some shots and a play

    Chris
    Hi Daniel

I actually sent a GEE up to Tim Peters of Austins Coffee and Tea Wholesale at Broadmeadow this week for evaluation - not far from you I think.

If youd like his contact details let me know and tell him I sent you!

    Nice review. Thank you.

    Id be interested in knowing

where the temperature sensor is located,
how much the temperature readings change during the shot,
how long it takes for the machine to get back to setpoint temperature after making a double-shot.

Have you had a chance to look into this?

    Best wishes

    Daniel

    Excellent review Rob..... [smiley=thumbsup.gif]

When excellent espresso is the goal, whats in a name :

Definitely sounds like a very interesting and capable machine though and well worth checking out for anyone with a Silvia sized budget..... 8-)

    GEE Espresso Machine Review

    Hi fellow Coffee Snob-ers,

I have posted up a review of the GEE Espresso Machine. You can read it here - http://coffeesnobs.com.au/YaBB.pl?num=1163235000/0#35

Just a quick disclaimer - I picked up the machine from Chris last weekend and am not receiving any incentives to do the review to keep it as independent and unbiased as possible.

Thanks to Chris for helping me host my pictures.

    Enjoy

    Cheers,

    Rob
