Re: 6910 - is this the end ?

I havent priced a upgrade machine, but Im guessing it wouldnt take too long to justify buying one. However, I see no reason to consider upgrading from what I reckon is bloody fantastic machine for the dollars. After reading of all the mods and crap one has to go through with a simple thing like a silvia just to get a decnt brew - Ill stick with the 6910, considering Ive just about got my head around what it likes and dislikes and how to treat it with mechanical sympathy. It aint fancy to look at but it does as good a job as any cafe machine that Ive had coffee from.

Hmm. Im probably putting at least 28 a week through a Sunbeam Cafe Crema...(2/3 espressos, 1/3 with milk). Thats just what I drink. My husband would add another 4 or so at weekends and as he works from home some weeks that would add maybe another 10 during the week. And then the occasional visitor (although they usually get plunger as its a bit painful making more than a couple of coffees at a time!)

Its lasted for more than six months at this rate, so it looks like $200 well spent!

I would think a stock Silvia paired with a decent grinder would produce as good if not better espresso than a 6910. It will texture milk better and quicker also. Has a far better reputation for reliablity.

Im not suggesting that the Silvia is an upgrade but certainly does not require mods to compete with a 6910.

Completely agree! I understand the commercial disservice given to this machine by its importers (alluded to in other threads), but dont believe everything you read... Go and try!

No doubt the silvia is a quality piece of gear, and I certainly didnt mean to offend or stir up any silvia owners, but, there aint no way a silvia is stretching milk better or faster than a good 6910, not to mention the time delay between brew and stretch with the silvia. Ive been there with a small boiler machine, hence why my gaggia sits in the cupboard and the 6910 on the bench. Just my opinion. :

And you said exactly that back here...

I definitely dont want a machine with a pissy little boiler , after the sunbeam instant milk stretching while extracting I could never go back.

I think some may have missed that.

I pretty much reckon all 6910 owners would naturally progress to a HX machine only as AM has suggested above as well.

Cant speak for the gaggia as I have not experienced one.

In my experience with the 6910 vs Silva steaming ability I can honestly say there is a fairly big difference, in the Silvias favour.
But I may have not experienced a good 6910.

Check out this 6910 / Silvia comparison review because your gaggia may have given the wrong impression.

                http://www.coffeetamper.com.au/**/reviews/sunbeam-silvia/

While the 6910 is great and performs very well for a thermoblock machine, the Silvia is going to get the milk to temp quicker.

The 6910 can brew and steam at the same time, and may represent better value for money for some people . . . . . It is obviously the machine that suits you.

Re: 6910 - is this the end ?

Im not really qualified to make any hard judgements on the silvia because Ive never used one, but I have a lot of experience with small boiler machines so any comments are a bit general. I guess its all relative, is the silvia better for streching milk because it heats it faster, or is the 6910 better because you can stretch while brewing. My revitalised 6010 does 250 mm of milk in a 1.05 minutes, anyone timed a silvia ?

Thats an interesting review on the 2 machines. I dont know if its just the audio but that 6910 pump sounded like it went a bit quiet about 5 seconds in. Just for comparison, mine is better than that on the factory setting. The steam output from the silvia is impressive though.

Re: 6910 - is this the end ?

Just steamed 250ml of milk straight from my fridge on my Silvia in 43secs.

Some retailers of the Silvia advertise that it brings 200ml of milk to temp in under 35 seconds, so 250ml in 43secs would be inline with that roughly.

Dont mean to labour the point but you can see, feel, hear the difference in the steam that comes from the Silvia when you open the tap.

Not that you should rush out and get a Silvia because you would still be ahead time wise if your making multiple milk based coffees daily. Doesnt represent a real upgrade in many ways either.

I usually put the milk and pitcher in the freezer for a few minutes to get the milk ice cold and the Silvia produces microfoam like its going out of style.

Was tossing up on the 6910 and Silvia before I got mine and found the review helpfull. Fairly detailed.

My wife doesnt drink coffee much at all and I drink espresso and the occasional latte so Silvia suited me better.

Like you say, horses for courses.

I guess like the review says, the silvia will be doing its thing long after the 6910 is dead. But for now, its doing the deed and doesnt owe me a cent. Brew on.

Its a bit odd to look at but sounds like a awesome unit.
