There is a reason why Sunbeam do not advise !!!

I eventually ran some cafetto restore descaler (twice!) without any improvements [I didn’t take AM’s advice as per other threads with doing this outside - i was lazy and opened up all the windows instead]. I’m not too sure what’s in the Restore Descaler, but some of it did get into my lungs and it was pretty nasty; made me cough and everything!)
When experienced CSérs provide any sort of a Warning etc.. It is for good reason.

However, at least your honest and others may learn!!!

In the end, I took my machine back to Myer (last night actually) and they were able to swap the unit over without having to send it away for a repair
    That is a good outcome...

Re: 6910 - is this the end ?

I have been having this problem since day one (machine is less than two weeks old).

I called up Sunbeam and explained that I could hear the pump but the steam was not consistent. The pump would tick away and the sound was okay. However, the steam output would vary throughout the steaming process - the steam would be either: weak, strong and nothing at all.

This made it impossible for me to get a velvety texture (I havent had any issues with milk texturing with an old em5800 and my inlaws rancillo)

I thought it might have been a blockage, but Sunbeam suggested that I run the steam and water wand simultaneously to get rid of any air locks - but the results were the same.

This particular machine (4th) has been the longest lasting, and most robust. Original purchase Sept 05.

1st 6900 replaced by Sunbeam under warranty for Steam Wand failure (replaced with a 6900)
2nd 6900 replaced by Sunbeam under warranty for Steam Wand failure (replaced with a 6910)
3rd 6910 replaced by Sunbeam out of initial 12 Month warranty for Pump failure (replaced with 6910)
4th 6910....going strong since May 2008 with no major issues (me saying this is further proof I like to live dangerously)  ;D

Some interesting coloured cr#p came out too.
Because I like to live dangerously....I let some of the Sunbeam descaler (tablet), run through the Steam Wand for about 20secs yesterday while I was doing a general descale.

Some very yucky green (like mucus) came out.....
Crap from around teh Steam Valve up the top ;D

Another reason I also mod teh steam valve and put in a blead 8-)

I guess like the review says, the silvia will be doing its thing long after the 6910 is dead. But for now, its doing the deed and doesnt owe me a cent. Brew on.

Thats an interesting review on the 2 machines.
Was tossing up on the 6910 and Silvia before I got mine and found the review helpfull. Fairly detailed.

My wife doesnt drink coffee much at all and I drink espresso and the occasional latte so Silvia suited me better.

Like you say, horses for courses.

Just steamed 250ml of milk straight from my fridge on my Silvia in 43secs.

Some retailers of the Silvia advertise that it brings 200ml of milk to temp in under 35 seconds, so 250ml in 43secs would be inline with that roughly.

Dont mean to labour the point but you can see, feel, hear the difference in the steam that comes from the Silvia when you open the tap.

Not that you should rush out and get a Silvia because you would still be ahead time wise if your making multiple milk based coffees daily. Doesnt represent a real upgrade in many ways either.

I usually put the milk and pitcher in the freezer for a few minutes to get the milk ice cold and the Silvia produces microfoam like its going out of style.

Thats an interesting review on the 2 machines. I dont know if its just the audio but that 6910 pump sounded like it went a bit quiet about 5 seconds in. Just for comparison, mine is better than that on the factory setting. The steam output from the silvia is impressive though.

Re: 6910 - is this the end ?

Im not really qualified to make any hard judgements on the silvia because Ive never used one, but I have a lot of experience with small boiler machines so any comments are a bit general. I guess its all relative, is the silvia better for streching milk because it heats it faster, or is the 6910 better because you can stretch while brewing. My revitalised 6010 does 250 mm of milk in a 1.05 minutes, anyone timed a silvia ?

there aint no way a silvia is stretching milk better or faster than a good 6910

hence why my gaggia sits in the cupboard and the 6910 on the bench
Cant speak for the gaggia as I have not experienced one.

In my experience with the 6910 vs Silva steaming ability I can honestly say there is a fairly big difference, in the Silvias favour.
But I may have not experienced a good 6910.

Check out this 6910 / Silvia comparison review because your gaggia may have given the wrong impression.

    http://www.coffeetamper.com.au/**/reviews/sunbeam-silvia/

While the 6910 is great and performs very well for a thermoblock machine, the Silvia is going to get the milk to temp quicker.

The 6910 can brew and steam at the same time, and may represent better value for money for some people . . . . . It is obviously the machine that suits you.
