Re: Service Sunbeam EM6910 - in Perth
Picked it up last week from Coffee Classic in Hilton.
I can recommend them for Sunbeam repairs.
They located the problem, narrowed down to the hot water switch which caused the intermittent problems initially.
$87 later and its going good so far. No relapses.
They did a descale and a flush as well which is what they do to all the machines they receive.
Cudos.

Have PMed you. Problem came back again.Originally posted by 353E2C39323E283534395B0 link=1293447079/15#15 date=1294088606Welcome to Snobs, I use a guy in Hilton to fix & service my Sunbeam. He is quite quick & reasonable.
and i dont really fancy another 40 minute trip to Rockingham there and back to drop off machine and another 40 minute trip there and back when its fixed and i don;t know if the problem will come back for the third time.
Hilton looks much closer.

Re: Service Sunbeam EM6910 - in Perth
Picked up the machine today finally 24th Jan after dropping off on the 13th.
All working well now. Paid $71 for apparent loose wiring connection.
Initially was told the thermoblock was out and a new one on the way and it would cost $180 approx fitted. Am very happy with the outcome, but confused at the same time..... :-?
Can only assume mine was mixed up with other EM6910s there. I saw one dropped off on the desk. Looks abused and uncleaned.
Or perhaps they found out i was a coffeesnob?
Thanks to Ashley and Five Senses for taking the time to service my beamer.

Re: Service Sunbeam EM6910 - in Perth
Hello.
Good video. Pour looks good. Mine starts blonding at the 17-18 second mark. I normally aim at a 25 second pour for 25 ml. In the cup the 25 ml tastes better than a 30 ml shot.
Try one notch finer. And then tamp on a set of scales for about 3 kg. Yes, i know someone will tell me it should be 15 kg etc but for me the best results on this machine is around 2-3kg and getting the dose, level of tamping and grind right.
The Smartgrinder should improve your shots when you eventually get to unwrap it. Let us know how you went with that.
Ive always appreciated AMs help and advice on any matter.
Hes more techno savvy than us combined

Re: Service Sunbeam EM6910 - in Perth
Ok thanks.
Ill do some re-reading. I think the dose should be pretty close, I have read a few threads on 5c test etc.
I hadnt picked up a thread previously (although Ive never been looking for it) on the gauge test you mentioned above and the sweet spot. Thought the fact that in order to get a good length extraction I had the gauge over the sweet spot might mean something in the equation, maybe its too difficult to work that out via the interweb and its a case of trial and error for me.
In terms of taste I was really quite happy with the espresso I got but Im sure it could be better, probably much better.
Will keep at it!
Thanks again.

Re: Service Sunbeam EM6910 - in Perth
Thanks for the tips AM.
Im sure I have plenty to learn, part of the reason for uploading the video.
Sweet spot using dual floor basket as a gauge is around 12 so with my video showing it around 1/1.30? what would your diagnosis be and recommendations for me to improve.
My current process, using (standard double basket) is grind direct into PF (from sunbeam EM480) tap when close to full to settle grind to slightly overfill, sweep to level with top of basket, leaving slightly higher level in centre but almost level. Light tamp, tap, heavier tamp.
I realise its a bit tricky and there are variables all over the place but if you had to guess.
Beans were roasted Wednesday, the roaster advised they believed they were good for 2 weeks.
Appreciate you taking the trouble to keep reading my posts and responding!
Cheers

Ummm Beans / Dose and Tamp all have a big pat to play.Originally posted by 2823312423272824293F460 link=1293447079/19#19 date=1295656854Decided to get the old camcorder out and capture a pour for general comment (maybe it should be a different thread) but here is evidence that the machine is working again.
Its still hampered by the operator, but this is what I managed to get out of the old girl this am

Probably could do with a slightly finer grind I think but its a much better pour than I have been getting for a long time!
1: What is your sweet spot on the gauge ?
That is with NO coffee and a Double floor basket. Then when you do a run what does teh gauge read and become stable at...
HINT. You should be aiming to get the gauge in about the same place with your beans / grind and Tamp....
My guess is that your over loading teh machine, but I could be mistaken. (If you are, then Collar and other maintenance issues will happen much sooner than later).
PS. The Double floor basket has an interesting single hole and in testing and review on a number of machines and test gauges the flow rate is such that it simulates a group of about 9.2 to 9.5 bar.
Drop it in a commercial machine with a brew head gauge and see what you get. Yep a flow rate that gives you a good volume in 30 sec with a head of aprox 9bar plus. Thus a handy tool to do a quick calibration / setup when servicing OR repairing a machine and you need to adjust the opv 8-)

Dropped my machine off at Five Senses last Thursday(13th). Only today (20th) they rang me to say a steam thermoblock is on the way.
Had to ring on 4 occasions to find out stage are we at.
How long it took you newbeanboy?

Re: Service Sunbeam EM6910 - in Perth
Thanks everone for your help.
I ended up using Goddens Electrical in Wembley who did a fine job from what I could tell. The Mrs needed to drop the machine off so 5Senses and Hilton werent an option. They seem reasonably knowledgable (although I am hardly one to test their expertise). In any case a little under $300 later the Sunbeam is back in business!
I think it is making better coffee now than it ever has, everything works and nothing leaks. A bit more dedicated maintenance from me from now on and hopefully just regular servicing until I get enough money for my HX!
On a side note I have ordered a Breville Smartgrinder on QFF points so hopefully an improvement there too!
Am using some beans from the Ristretto guys at the moment and quite liking those. Happy days anyway as although 5 cafes have opened up within 500m of my place in the last 6 months they are all but 1 very ordinary and even the ok one is only ok.
Cheers

Re: Service Sunbeam EM6910 - in Perth
Goddens and five senses would be the ones to choose if options have exhausted newbeanboy. Ring both of them.
Looks like you might be up for a big repair bill.
Since youve had the machine for some time now, you should look at the option of upgrading too if costs of repair quotes are not worth the trouble.
Pity the free grinder with the EM6910 sale ended 31st Dec 2010.
Perhaps a Lelit should be considered?

Re: Service Sunbeam EM6910 - in Perth
Everyone please be aware that only a handful of Sunbeam agents have been trained to fix the 6910.
Sunbeam can tell you which ones.
