Re: Thoughts on the correct dose for my EM6910
Just remember DOSE and Shot time are different but related (Dont forget Grind).
I can only recommend one thing...
A: Updosing is Fine
B: QVERDOSING, IS, NOT !
The trick is the recognise and understand teh difference.

I wouldnt get too caught up with a "standard shot", I dont really think it exists.Originally posted by 45404A474A574A240 link=1293457924/44#44 date=1294813096So how do I get a standard shot if I am not Paul Bassett or dont share his taste??? :-/
Theyre basically just starting guidelines.
Play around with settings and determine what you believe tastes the best,

:-?
Dont get too caught up on the numbers.
Every machine is different and every basket is different.
The question you want to be asking yourself is "Do I like how this tastes?"
It looks like you havent purchased a machine yet, maybe PM a local CS with a machine and taste the coffee to see if you like it before you buy one. Most CS are quite happy to share in this way

Pull the shot for 20 seconds instead of 30.Originally posted by 45404A474A574A240 link=1293457924/44#44 date=1294813096So how do I get a standard shot if I am not Paul Bassett or dont share his taste??? :-/
You could even miss the first and last 5 seconds worth.
Both of these "techniques" will change the flavour profile of your shot.
or you could tip out some of the espresso or use more milk

Re: Thoughts on the correct dose for my EM6910
Still confused. Strong coffee is fine, but to get a standard shot you need 7g of coffee and 30ml water. Im reading people saying that 7g of coffee is too low in a sunbeam basket and hence soggy puck, and that smaller baskets dont fit the sunbeam non standard handle. So how do I get a standard shot if I am not Paul Bassett or dont share his taste??? :-/

Re: Thoughts on the correct dose for my EM6910
I think thats a good guess. Word is that Paul Bassett (2003 world Batista champ), who worked with SB to design the thing was/is big on updosing.
PS, still havent gotten round to ordering a 14g basket, and might have be a bit delay now as I live in Toowoomba and we had a bit of a hammering with the rain today and the road to here is cut in several places
Hope everyone else on CS is OK.

Confused noob, researching first machine including EM6910. I was taught that (on commercial machines) youd want 7g of coffee as a single shot. So why does everyone talk about 10g or more for the EM6910?? Is that to compensate for some kind of deficiency with this machine or is this common to other domestic machines (for example the Rancilio Silvia which seems to be the other machine worthy of consideration)?
:-?

Nice photos JayBee - great work!
(Bit off topic for a sec ...) Another upshot of this thread has been that Im about to attempt home roasting after you mentioned youd done it before. Will thank or despise you in the future depending on the outcome

Re: Thoughts on the correct dose for my EM6910
Great to know the thread has been beneficial to those who perservered.
Sometimes something like this tests the patience of those trying to get it right and its good that keeping at it has ended in a better result or the result they are after.
I try to improve my shots even though i have been doing it for quite some time now. Just when i think theres not much i can improve, theres things i discover that can be tweaked, and then to keep it consistent thereafter.

Re: Thoughts on the correct dose for my EM6910
This thread has been very helpful to me, Ive adopted 2 changes to my espresso technique as a result:
1) Now use tamped coffee level of 5-6 mm below rim.
2) Replaced WDT with some gentle side to side shakes before tapping.
Coffee is tasting as good as it ever has, the dripping honey is back too.

Re: Thoughts on the correct dose for my EM6910
Ok, after reading all of the replies and trying lots of permeatations, my latest is:
20g coffee ground slightly coarser than my original setting and settled by tapping to make a level portafilter full. Medium Tamped to about 5mm deep.
This extracts nicely in about 25s and leaves a good dry puck.
