  • PID for Gaggia coffee deluxe

    I want to PID my machine, i found a PID controler and now i think which thermocouple to get. I want thermocouple that will go in the thermostat place. So will this thread work:
    Specifications:
    Type: K type
    Resistance between terminals: 7.6[ch937]
    Cable length: 3.3 foot / 1 meter
    Thread: 5.85mm (0.2")
    Sensing tip length: 7.5mm (0.3")
    Threaded nut material: steel
    Temperature measurement range: 0 - 800[ch730]C
    Brand new and unused
    Or if some one knows which is the thread on the thermostat please write..

    Apologies in advance for not answering the question but...

    My best advice would be not to spend money on this type of machine, and put the money towards a better machine.

    Once you have a better machine you will wonder why you didnt upgrade sooner (PID or no PID).

      I just removed the brew thermostat from the boiler (on the side), and drilled a 1 mm hole in the center of 4mm screw,(so its hollow) inserted thermocouple bead into the screw and screwed it into the hole where the thermostat came out.

      My gaggia with PID gives me excellent results, very happy with it.

      4mm is the thread size of original thermostat.

        yes i saw your modification but i am not clear does the thermocouple goes all the way through the screw? or with other words how deep is the 1mm hole?

          I placed mine differently, but I believe it goes all the way through the screw. Ideally, put some thermal grease paste in the hole first to help thermal conductivity.

            yes, all the way threw the screw with heat sink compound, normally the bead of the thermocouple is covered with heat shrink or other plastic sleeve, this jams it in the 1 mm hole so it presses firmly against the boiler when screwed in.

            my thermocouple was brought from Dick Smith or Jaycar years ago, normally can buy with PID of ebay, etc. K type is most common, just choose lowest  PID range that cover the temp you want , usually 200C

            get bare bead type (cheap), not one mounted in wand or threaded.(expensive)

                I built a few prototype probes awhile back for Gaggias.  Like Firepower, I drilled out a M4 bolt (I used stainless, FWIW) and threaded a thermocouple through the drilled hole.

                Best success was with a fine wire (30 gauge) type T bead thermocouple.  I epoxied the thermocouple into the M4 bolt, and extended the bead around 2 mm beyond the tip of the bolt.

                Before inserting the probe, I threaded a M4 nut on to the probe.  Then I threaded the bolt/probe into the M4 socket at the base of the boiler until the tip of the projecting bead just contacted the bottom of the socket.  I used the jam nut to secure everything.

                This arrangement worked very well, much better than my other prototypes with the sensor mounted on the top of the boiler.

                Unfortunately, making these custom probes proved to be way too much trouble, so we never took the project any further.
