    Default output volume.

Recently on this thread it was explained that the BDB operates by measuring water volume.

I just did a did a default 2 cup pour with an empty pf and it output 100 ml.

So should I be adjusting the 2 cup button volume down to 60 ml, and then start adjusting dose/grind etc until I get a ~30 second pour?

No, you shouldnt measure 60mls using an empty portafilter because some of that water will be soaked up by the coffee. Its better to set the 1 or 2 cup settings using coffee that been ground/dosed/tamped to give you the 30ml/30sec extraction (keep in mind, this is just a guide - theres no reason why you cant stray away from these figures)

In addition to that, different coffee/grind size will soak differently, so you may find some variations when you use the 1 or 2 cup buttons.

There may also be some water thats unaccounted for when it escapes via the OPV. I do recall reading something about 2 sensors, so Breville may have already factored this in.

Yes, the BDB has two flow meters. One is at the OPV bypass outlet back to the water tank, another is at the OPV inlet from the water tank. The microcontroller software of the machine calculates the flow volume between the two flow meters to get net volume flew to the brewing system.

        Thanks

As specialpants mentioned, you need to set volumes actually pulling a shot. In fact the flowmeters are only accurate when the flow rate in use is exactly the same as the flow rate when set. ie if you set the volumes with an extraction of 30ml in 30secs, then the volumes wont be accurate if subsequent flow rates are 25ml in 30sec or 35ml in 30sec etc. LMs and Synesso are no different in this regard.

Hey Phil, just wondering how much you have to stretch the milk to make it easier to pour a rosetta?

BTW, any chance you could make and upload some videos with a few tips on using a naked portafilter? Even just one video of a decent pour would be nice
Texture your milk at the same time as the espresso is pouring. Dont make one before the other.

Heres a youtube clip from a BES900 naked. 35-36sec extraction. Notice how dark the espresso is, even at this length of extraction.

Interesting - I just phoned Breville to order a naked PF and they tell me there is a new part number BES058NP and its $87.96 posted - the web site still shows BEA058NP @ $99.95 plus postage. I have no clue what is going on here!

I do both at the same time. I find with a 600mL jug, you can leave the jug on the tray and have the wand at the right angle. This works for 300mL latte bowls as well as 2 x 180mL cappucino style cups.

                  I typically do this:

                  - Kick off grind
                  - Pour milk. Chuck in thermometer.
                  - Purge wand. Start steaming starting with a bit of surfing.
                  - tamp/polish etc.
                  - Purge block. Lock in Portafilter while checking milk temp.
                  - Begin extraction. Change location/orientation of jug if required.
                  - Just as the 30-35 secs are winding up, milk temp is creeping up to 60-62degs which is where I stop... itll run over to about 65-67degs which I find is about hot enough for latte/flat white etc.
                  - Pour.
                  - Enjoy.

hmmmm, I wonder whats the difference :-?

Looking at my Breville invoice I can see an item code of BNF58MM
(Note: this naked portafilter was part of the first batch in December)
Not sure if the design has been changed since

                      Thanks Phil.  8-)

I thought I had seen all of the BDB videos on the youtube Breville channel. Browsed the channel 3-4 weeks ago and must have missed that one

edit: Found this one as well, nice pour, posted 10 months ago (way before the first batch)
Is that a mazzer major grinder in the background?

BEA058NP seems to be the part number on the Breville Australia website ($99.95).
BES058NP seems to be the part number on the Breville USA website ($79.99)

So I would hazard a guess that the person you spoke to did the pricing based on the US part number and price and added postage. Hopefully you just saved 20 bucks!

                          Brett.

No difference. The price changed because the people in control of those things cocked up!
