I think its worth it. You can screw around with making stuff or just spend the $400 and be done with it. Andy even includes some beans.

This is getting off topic for this thread though. Lets concentrate on the Breville here.

        Hi,

Im having an issue with my BES900 again

It looks like it is leaking around the sides. Could this be due to the seal or (worse) something Im suddenly doing wrong??  :-[

Ok, so I thought Id post some photos - hoping somebody can help out.

This is the setting I have my grinder set to:

This is the amount of coffee being grinded:

This is where I tamper to:

This is the position the handle is at:

And this is the coffee coming out of the side of the portafiller  :-( (hope the image is ok):

Is this because of the seal? Im also not getting the pressure <sigh> Just dont know whats going on.

As another piece of info - I think with the last lot of coffee, I Must have been overdosing because it was hard to put the group handle on.

        Any ideas?

        =F.

Thats way too much coffee and that explains the leak. The entire stainless section should be sunken into the portafilter.

Thanks. That means the grinder is over dosing?

Yep, you need to adjust the dose on the grinder (probably 1 or 2 notches less)

There are a lot of tips contained within this thread to help you improve your techniques. Look for Phils youtube videos (search for BrevilleAustralia on youtube)

Please dont think of it as the grinder overdosing. Its really up to you to work out what works best, and thats part of the enjoyment of the process too. I often make more coffee than I should because I want to try some little change.

With the BES 900 all you really have to play with is the dose and grind level, its does a great job of keeping temperature and pressure constant for you. Enjoy playing around with those two and learning how they change the result.

how does one control the dose with the grinder ? Id like my single to be a little more, but my double to be a little less ? Is that possible ?

Please use a precise digital scale to measure and find the most appropriate amount for 1-cup and 2-cup coffee.

                    Thanks

According to your description, you had been overdosing.
If you have a precise digital scale, you should dose around 12g for 1-cup and 18.5g for 2-cup.

                      Thanks

Single and double baskets require a different dose due to differences in anatomy. In general 2 x single  = <1 x double for a given grind size.

Whilst top end digital grinders allow for precise setting of single and double grind times, less expensive grinders generally just deliver half a double.

Honestly, the best thing you can do is to turf the single basket and enjoy the coffee from the double. Options are to ditch half, pull a shorter double or keep half to use in your next ice coffee or tiramisu.

As for a digital scale, I stepped on one but I maxed it out at 500g. I binned that one :. FWIW, they may be useful when learning how to dose consistently, but I feel too many are weighing so as to cover poor dosing techniques. I think its ultimately better to learn to how be consistent in what you do and keep the scales for baking.

Can you elaborate what you mean by but I feel too many are weighing so as to cover poor dosing techniques?

This is where I tamper to:
                            Obvously over dosed.

When all else fails, read the instructions.

Read about dosing on page 24 of the 900 instruction book.

Some people weigh the beans, some use the auto doser, while others including me, measure the beans to be ground.

Elsewhere in CoffeeSnobs you can read about the 5 cent method and rice method of measuring the desirable dose. You should leave enough room between the tamped coffee and the shower screen to allow the top edge of the filter to seal with the gasket and to allow room for the coffee to expand up to the shower screen when wet.

                            Barry.

Ive found the best way to dose is not so much to weigh the grinds, its running a straight edge over the top of the baskets to level it, before tamping.

Works a treat, short of that, cutting a curve into an old un-used card would do the job sufficiently as well if you feel the need to dose less then a full basket.
