Interesting, i think for now, ill stick with what i like and what i know then venture out when i get more confident. Ive gone back to the single basket because i am not going to give up on it. My grinder is set 1 shot -3 with grind set to about 75% Espresso and its yeilding quite good results, smoothly, oozing flow, strong rich full body flavour.

Thirteen I use the single basket all the time, I prefer the taste of my coffee this way, I put 14 grams in the basket which is technically a double anyway.

Im also saving for a Pullman base and 15g VST basket, they are doubles not singles.

Do what you feel you like, no one has your taste buds but you!!!

Similar results here, with double shot. -3 quantity, and grind set under the first S in espresso. The pour starts at about 9 seconds, so will adjust one notch finer. Had too much coffee today so cant test :-)

          • Re: Breville BES900 Dual Boiler - Owners thread

Hey all, just thought I would share my recent experience trying to get my BES 900s OPV adjusted to extract at 9 bar instead of the 12-13 bar it extracts at currently. I put my machine in for this adjustment a month ago and still do not have it back. When dealing with their authorised repair centre, Im treated abruptly and not called back.

I knew about the OPV issues after reading these forums and some blog posts around the internet. After deciding I wanted the adjustment done to my machine, I called Breville to arrange it. They told me it was a quick, 15-30 minute adjustment that could happen while I wait. All I had to do was bring my machine to one of their authorized service centres (I was emailed an excel spreadsheet containing their centers).

Armed with this, I took a morning off work and drove to the first of their centers (since they are only open during business hours). At this first centre, I was told that it would take a week to do the adjustment despite what Breville told me over the phone. Displeased with this, I phoned the second centre in Sydney who told me they could do it over night (not the 15 minutes Breville described to me, but certainly better than a week). I decided to drive across Sydney to the other centre and drop it in there with the hope of fetching it again tomorrow morning.

After a couple of days and no word from the service centre that the machines adjustment was completed I called them to get an update. I was told that the machine itself was faulty and was not generating pressure. I flat out disagreed with this and told them that Ive never experienced the issues that they were describing before dropping the machine in to them. I also told them that I had a video showing the extraction reaching pressure (over pressure in fact, 12 bar). I was told that they had run their standard suite of tests on the machine and determined that it needed a new LCD panel (apparently it also houses a computer that regulates extraction times / pressures / etc). They also told me they had ordered the part from Breville and the machine should be ready within a week.

Another week passed with no result, called the service centre and was told that they were still waiting on the part. At this point I called Breville Australia to lodge a complaint with the following issues: 1) Waiting over 2 weeks (so far) with no result for my OPV adjustment. 2) Concern that the repair centre found basic issues with the machine not reaching pressure that I had never, ever seen before & have a video showing otherwise. I was told that a complaint had been entered in the system and their service representative would call me. I was never called back & had to follow up with them myself. Im still waiting word back.

Its now been over one month since I dropped the machine in for this simple adjustment. Ive had to live without my BES900 for a month, my beans Ive had in this time have no doubt degraded in quality. Ive had to take time off work to drop the machine in and drive around Sydney (and will need to do so again when I finally have to pick it up).

Most unfortunate, sounds like youve been very patient, time to start making loud noises I reckon.

Id be on the warpath if i was you, if Breville has told you they can do it while you wait, then thats wat is to be expected. I realise the workshops who fix it might have other things going on, But if they are authorised repairers then they too will know its only a 30 minutes job. Meaning they should have organised it with you at a convient time when you can drop it, they fix it and away you go.. Not 1 week.. I wouldnt even give them a day. Id expect it done on the spot.

Get onto Breville and let them know

Very patient to wait a whole month before following up. I would have been kicking and screaming if I had to wait a week.  >

Would just like to note after having followed this entire thread from the first post I do not recall any other owners with such a major issue (besides the guy that posted about receiving an electricity shock )

My BDB was bought >4 months ago with the OPV @ 11 bar. I think this week would be a good time to have it adjusted.

Need some suggestions on which Melbourne service centre I should visit.
Anyone else here from Melbourne who has had their OPV adjusted? Mind posting the service centre and wait time?

Hey Khaless, if you drop me a PM with your contact details & the Service Centre it went to, Ill follow it up tomorrow.

For the record, we make no guarantees about the service times of our agents. They are a third party operating an independant business over which we have no control. If anyone has been told otherwise I apologise. Do it while you wait is just not practical in most service centre businesses as every customer wants it done this way & this is not possible.

If you are having an issue, drop me a PM, no need to plaster it all over a forum.

                      Cheers, Phil

Honestly, adjusting the OPV is very simple and easy thing. Nothing need to be afraid of. Miss Shape_shifter (Nicole) had posted very detailed procedures to show you how to do it.
The OPV adjustment may need several iterations because the hysteresis effect of the OPV, you may experience several "residues" of the setting point and finally obtain a stable setting.

Although this may be a single case, it is still worthwhile for Breville to think about the possible processing flaws and any sensible plans to restore customers confidence.

Maybe someone can put this on a sticky as Ive said it a million times ;-))

                            Cheers, Phil
Hi Phil, thanks for this. Yes I have seen this before. Understand. I suppose for me, i cant get over the fact that every time I change beans I need to go through this whole process. I quite havent understood how different bean types will make such a difference on the out put of grind (i.e. the dose size) which consequently affects rate of flow etc. I need to do some more reading to really understand what it is about the beans that has this affect (i.e. some beans are more oily, softer etc)

I change my beans very regularly - we like to keep trying different flavours. Since my last post I have changed back to a bean that I used quite some time back. Now I am running the grinder dose amount back at the mid point and grind size about 4 from the end. It is all working fine. Im not having any issues of overflowing or seeping of the water/coffee as per the previous photos.

BTW, in the end I did manage to stop my last problem of overflowing with the previous beans (as per my photos attached!!).

What I have found - and as you have highlighted - if the tampering doesnt come down to about 6mm below the top of the basket, there will be some leaking. I am currently finding that at times drops of water will overflow and run down the group handle (similar to my photos but without coffee running).

Overall, its looking ok. I think Im going to stick with these beans for a while now :-X :-[ ;D

                            Thanks guys.

                            =F.

Almost feels like an Apple product, I think of an feature and how cool it would be if its there, and its there.
Dont get me started on Apple products!!!
Yes i too have to say that Apple is the best ;D

Anyhow, regarding the one cup coffee basket (different topic) - I occasionally make my coffee using the single basket, and they normally come out ok actually (when Ive got the whole technique working properly ). I generally run the grinder to dose +1 or +2 and tamper down the 6mm. I normally get 9Bar on the gauge and extract for about 20sec (manual mode). So not sure why everybody says that single baskets are not ok :-/

                              =F.

Me either - I understand they are harder to master but without then you waste a lot of coffee or get really wired!
