Im looking forward to my grinder returning.
Definitely, a good grinder is more important than a good semi-auto espresso machine for most of cases.
My Mazzer SJ is currently on the way to my home. It is my second grinder.

Great company to deal with. I have placed a couple of orders in the past and found their prices reasonable.

You might as well purchase some Caffetto from them to save on postage.

I bought the regular Caffetto rather than EVO

Yeah they will fit - It doesnt have to be Cafetto - any machine cleaner will do. I think mine came from Bombora and I got it from a B&M shop here. Get it all from a site sponsor like talkcoffee... http://shop.talkcoffee.com.au/collections/types?q=Cleaning+and+maintenance - they have the blind filter and clean machine there.

oops - coffee parts are a site sponsor too. Get everything from the one place to save on postage too as suggested.

I know this is a bit off topic but what are the prices like at Bombora? They dont list or advertise their prices online and I could never be bothered phoning in to get a price for an item

              edit:
I also bought a Pallo tool group head cleaning brush from coffeeparts a while back but found the brush was a tight squeeze and not all the bristles were able to make contact with the group head rubber seal.

Has anyone got any recommendations on a group head brush that will fit more easily into the group head seal?

                They only wholesale.

I think you will find all the grouphead brushes are the same.

                    :-[
Im sure smaller grouphead brushes must be available somewhere. The diameter of the brush on the Pallo tool is just slight larger than the gap where the portafilter locks into the grouphead.

Im basically looking for a brush with a smaller diameter maybe 2-3mm smaller.

                    More suggestions welcome

My brush is a tight fit but works ok when its been in hot water.  If you want to reduce it, try using a sharp blade and trim some of the bristles from the outer edge.

I know its not the grinder forum but everyone else seems to be doing it ...  :

Breville Smart Grinder arrived today. Stuck the dial dead in the middle of the espresso range and first cup was fine. Dose needed turning up a couple of notches though. I guess not all of them require shims. It would be nice to think theyre getting that right straight out of the factory now. People should definitely not have to order parts that most probably dont even know they can get to make an appliance work out of the box.

I think its better than the Sunbeam 480, not a huge difference in taste, but some, and definitely quieter and less messy. Would be nice if there was a half-size bean hopper though. I was tempted by a better grinder, but they tend to be big and inconvenient and very expensive. The price of a Mazzer Mini set up for domestic instead of with doser is a hard sell. Maybe one day...

It is a good grinder. It does take a bit of tinkering to get it set. With the stock single wall baskets, i need 4 from finest on grind and -1 on amount for my single espresso and double i need -3 but same fineness.

Is anyone using the VST noticing the grind isnt so touchy compared to stock baskets or same deal ?

Are the VST baskets used in the 900 producing better shots than the stock ?

                              I dont know. LOL.

I got the VST tripple basket for convenience. It takes exactly twice as much coffee as the single basket so its just 2 presses of the button on the grinder. I havent used the Breville double basket since I got it.

                                Hi all. First time poster.

I bought the BES900 and a BCG800 last week. Its the first machine Ive owned and Im super happy with it heh. I thought Id give myself some time playing with it before I posted but now Ive got a few questions:

First, I get the impression everyone is using the two cup basket because it apparently gives better shots. Are people using that but just filling it with a single shot worth, or filling it properly and either having doubles or chucking half?

Second, using the two cup preset on the BCG800 Im getting extractions that drop on 9-10 seconds and finish around 34 seconds. That seems pretty good, based on what Ive read, yea?

Third, what exactly does the naked portafilter do? Is it just for assessing your flow etc? Im pretty keen to get better at making coffee, so if itll help me improve I may get one.

Ill probably have some more questions later heh. Thanks in advance.

                                -Andy
