I am also sometimes (when flow is really slow like when using the 1 cup basket) getting more espresso in 1 cup than the other.
    Thoughts?
my thought is ...... why are you using a single shot basket into 2 cups ???

I used it as an example. The same effect happens if i get a more ristretto pour from the dual basket.

Someone else earlier in this thread had an uneven flow problem - I thyink in the end it was a PF problem and Breville replaced it. If the machine is not level that could also explain it.

Regarding the rubber disc - I agree - at the start if there is a tablet in there it will act like a blind filter till some is disolved.

When ever i shoot 2 cups, the left cup always gets about 10-20% less coffee than the right cup..

Is this something worth reporting ? My machine is level as ive put a spirit level on the bench

Just taking a guess, but the original rubber disc with the hole in was probably designed to provide some backflush while cleaning while the tablet is whole and then to allow plenty of the tablet+water out through the basket and spout to clean them and the originally fitted nasty plastic insert in the bottom of the portafilter - which obviously needs all the cleaning it can get. The tablet and size of hole were probably set up to work well with the pressure and length of cleaning cycle.

So, if somebody got a solid rubber disc out of the box from Breville, did they also get a portafilter shipped without the nasty plastic insert? Maybe the cleaning cycle program is also a little different?

I have a load of left-over Sunbeam cleaning tablets. Does anyone know if they will cause any problems in the BDB? They seem to have different ingredients.
Hi I agree on the rubber discs issue as I have just unpacked my new BES900 which has no plastic insert in portafilter and no hole in the rubber/silicon disc. hope that helps BeanInPeril

I just owned a BES900 Espresso Machine for $999. Yes, there are issues but for me it works fine. I got mine from a promo.

Funnily enough, the same bloke just told an overseas forum that he bought another one of these for just $1,199. Must make a lot of coffee in different countries....

Bought my double boiler about a month ago and have been experimenting, mostly satisfied overall here!  Id like to get a naked portafilter tho, BrevilleUS seems to be out of stock and nobody else seems to carry em online.  Any leads where i could buy an official breville one or which off brand works best with brevilles own basket packs?

Only the Breville PF will fit the group head. Try here for a genuine naked PF:

Hot off the presses........ Breville is now an official partner & sponsor of the 2012 WBC (World Barista Championships) being held in Vienna under the WCE (World Coffee Events) banner June 12-15! No we havent replaced Nuova Simonelli as the official espresso machine, but we are the Official Blender Sponsor! This means we get unfetted access to live content, competitors, etc so well be able to bring unprecedented coverage to Australian coffee snobs!

I judged both Craig Simon winner of the Australian Barista Championship & Matt Perger winner of the Brewers Cup in Melb last week & from what I saw, we are in good shape to bring home the gold! This was the first time the Brewers Cup has been run & I judged some amazing coffee from the six finalists!

Well have info up shortly on how were going to share all this stuff with you guys, so sayed tuned.

                            Cheers, Phil

In case you were all wondering like they were over on CG, heres a link to some magnified images I took of the stock Breville basket versus the VST baskets. You can draw your own conclusions.

From what I can see both the VST and BES900 baskets have very uniform hole sizes. Really hard to pick a winner.

BTW, those rough edges around the holes on the VST is coffee residue right?
