Kariz - to give you an idea on the wide variation supermarket beans have to fresh beans and fresh beans have to fresh beans.

Ive had a bit of practice with the smart grinder now so when i roast, Peru, Columbia, Brazil or a variation of fresh beans, i can guess roughly where to set the dose and grind fineness, takes a shot or 2 but usually get it smack on, temperature also varies a bit but its pretty easy to guage.

I went from this to a bag of Supermarket Vittoria and the grind was TOTAL out, the shot went from the dark thick oozey oily fluid to running drain water. So turfed it, reset grinder up a few notches, shot again, same deal. Threw out, shot again, this time just blocked the portafilter up, every shot had 0 crema, looked weak and watery.

Basically tried a cup and it was fowl.

Some people suggest fill your hopper grind, then return beans to the bag, my BCG i can fit about 250g in the hopper and i finish that in less than a week so i just leave them in there.

Goto your local coffee roasters and get yourself some freshly roasted beans that are roasted within at least last couple of days then you should be good to go.

David - Im not sure really, i always thought it was strange when ever everyone in here was going on about a hole in the silicon disc, cause mine never had it ??

My machine has OPV set to 10.5 bar so mine could be revised version. I got mine around March? I recall posting up when i bought it

If you have found a way that works, stick to it.

I mainly use the single. As discussed earlier in this string on the site, the BDB single filter actually holds 14 grams of coffee, which is double the traditional 7 gram single.

Perhaps you are under dosing the double basket. The correct dose is when the tamper has the top edge of the silver metal cap level with the top of the filter basket. See page 24 in the BDB booklet.

The trouble with supermarket coffee is they show a use by date, not the date roasted. The use by date tells the supermarket staff when to take it off the shelf. It could be 12 months after roasting. Most coffee makes the best coffee when used by about 3 weeks.

Ahh yes !.. this sounds very likely. Maybe your "smart grinder" is not smart enough to know which basket you are using.
Any idea how mugh ( gms) you are dosing ?
If all else fails... fill the basket, settle , level off to the rim, and tamp. That will give you a reasonable starting point.

It definitely isnt underfilled -- If anything, Ive done a few shots that were OVER (Hard to tamp down the OEM tamp level to portafilter rim) -- And still, watery results.

              Its odd.

Im going to order another double shot basket and see how I go. Im also going to buy some fresh beans, ha. Ill check back in.

Its really not the basket. no way. Has to be dose or grind - or crap beans.

The single shot basket is pouring perfectly, though? Its odd. Im not saying its definitely that. I just find it odd that the single is pouring perfectly and the double is just watery coffee with no crema. I dont get it, ha ha.

I dont know. Back to the drawing board. Ill get some fresh beans and see if that does the trick. And it cant be the grind -- Ive tried from the finest to the coarsest and no luck. Ive cleaned the BCG and the BDB and both are fine.

                  Confusing.

It must be the beans. But the beans work well in single shots? No idea. Im at a loss, really lol.

Its weird alright. I normally use the single basket myself - single wall, single basket. If Im using a double I will use my VST 22g basket as it works better with 2 presses of my grinder button - not so much wasted coffee. I do find my pressure is less with that basket but still good crema.

Yes, same to me. The single wall single basket used by BDB holds 12g ground beans and the single wall, single basket used by my Alex Duetto 2 also holds 12.5g ground beans.

Both machines perform very comparable quality of pulling a 1 cup shot without issues. Even the color of crema for both cases are very close.

                        Cheers

I got it from a site sponsor - name escapes me now (I think it was Greg Pullman) - you could get a tripple from http://shop.talkcoffee.com.au/products/14g-deep-double-filter-basket-58mm for $15 about 1/3 the cost of the VST.

To some extent this is normal, as a double basket will require a finer grind than a single. So a good shot on a single will produce an underextracted (too fast) shot with the double, at the same grind size. It isnt usually that big a difference however... You werent using the dual floor single basket and the single floor double were you?

See how the double basket goes with some freshly roasted beans.
