After using for a good 6 months now, it is going great! although the steam wand noticeably losing its power over time. But still creates great micro foam and texture for the milk. Absolutely bang for bucks!  ;D

Currently pulling Campos Single origins and it taste heavenly!
Mine has been over 7 months but the steaming power is very good and strong.
Reguarly cleaning with detergent and backflushing may keep the piping and pumps clean but no affects to scale. Scale may be another reason to cause steaming weak.
I use super diluted citric acid to purge steam boiler reguarly and the very tiny bits does getting out from the steam wand. I know what I am doing may cause some dispute, so I just dont want to stir you up again.

    Cheers
Please explain... Im interested... Only thing i do to my machine is frequent clear water backflush, after coffee session or 2 and weekly/fornightly caffetto backflush

13 - Phil has explicitly said not to attempt to descale the machine. It should not need rescaling till its 3 years old anyway. I hope nick likes citrus milk. It boggles the mind why he would do this on a new machine.

well thats wat i thought? thats why i asked..... Water and Espresso machine cleaner is all my machine gets and will get. If it needs to be descaled then ill just pay the extra for a pro to do it.

It needs to be performed since the machine was brand new. If your unit hasnt been done any "descale" alike process, it is not recommended to attempt to do any similar "descale" process. If you did it, large pieces of scale will not be able to purge out of boilers.

Of course, it is still possible to drain the boilers completely such as from the connection pipe to OPVs.

              Cheers

ah i see, shouldnt the in tank filter do a good enough job at softening the water ?

I think the tank filter can just slow down a bit of scale build-up but cannot prevent it.
The rate of scale build-up depend on many factors. If the scale was just formed and coated on the boiler internal surface, very diluted citric acid solution to rinse boilers can easily get them off. The very tiny scale particles float in water and can be purged out. The whole process takes very long time but it is easy to check when it completes after no more particle in the water.

                  Cheers

Hi all, been a while since Ive been here but the BDB has been doing great until now - I just got an Err1 message.

I have my machine (early version from mid last year) on auto start. It starts up at about 6.30am so its nice and warm when I want to make my first coffee. This morning I had a little hangover and slept in! So it was on warm function for quite a while before I got up, then when I went to make a coffee some time later the Err1 message was up. None of the buttons would work and the manual doesnt say anything about it, so I simply turned it on and off again. It has restarted and warmed to 93degrees so all seems fine, but I wanted to ask if anybody else has had this and if there is anything I should be worried about/looking out for?

                    Cheers

The only time I had trouble starting my machine, I found that either the steam or hot water tap was slightly turned on.

I live in Sydney where the tap water is pretty soft.

As well as the water tank ion exchange filter, I use a filtered water jug that uses both activated carbon and ion exchange treatment.

I understand that Perth tap water can be hard due to dissolved minerals, especially at times when underground water is used.

I suggest that you contact the Perth water authority, other coffee brewers in Perth or experts in water treatment such as Bombora, for their advice on how to reduce dissolved minerals in your water, if you want to reduce scale forming in your machine.

                        The choice is yours.

Someone here also posted "Err1" error code but his machine just cannot not heat up and always dispalyed "Err1" message even after unplug and re-plug the AC power cord.
In your case, your unit can still heat up so I speculate "Err1" may relate to some issues with sensor failures. I think the most possible culprit is the water level sensor in the steam boiler.

How long you clean your machine? with what methods?

                          Cheers

yeah i plan on getting a bombora, the water here is pretty bad. I guess ill have to get it descaled anyway eventually, so either way not the end of the world

Im on the central coast and out water is very soft here too. It never even registers on those testing strips. Im not using any filter except the water tank one from Breville. I already have a RO filter and Im not using that with the machine.

Hi all,  been a while since Ive been here but the BDB has been doing great until now - I just got an Err1 message.....
Info on Err1 from Phil posted on another forum.
                                http://coffeegeek.com/forums/espress.../560878#560878

This code just shows there was potenially a general error. Please follow this procedure to get more detailed info:

With the power cord plugged IN & turned ON at the wall socket.
                                Machine OFF
Press & hold IN all four buttons simultaneously, Menu, Arrow Down, Arrow Up, Exit. While holding them all down, press the Power button
The LCD will now be in the Service Mode
There will be a single, double or even triple digit displayed. This is the number of shots over 7 secs, divided by 10. So if you had 12 on the LCD, this would mean you have pulled 120 shots longer than 7 secs.
                                Press the Menu button
You will then see a four digit display XX:XX make a note of the 2 digits to the left & the right of the colon.
Let me know what these numbers are & I can tell you if you have a problem or not.
Press the Exit button at any time to exit service mode & go back to startup mode.

                                Cheers, Phil
