Ive experienced the shot times being longer and ive found its actually very smart design. The 1 and 2 shots dont ever change on my machine they ALWAYS remain same. I dont reprogram or touch them in anyway.
Sounds like your machine may have the newer firmware and it solves the problem. How old is it? Based on the dated of Phils post the new firmware was probably introduced late 2011
People are not talking about the time a shot takes rather an incorrect volume being delivered is the issue.

My understanding from what Phil has written in this thread is that the volume is dependant on the flow rate. Change the flow rate and you change the volume.

Do you want USB or Wifi on your on your espresso machine ?
On a $500 machine no, on a $1500 machine why not? An usb port would add a few cents to the cost and as in this case where the manufacturer has made an improvement that they have seen as important enough to introduce mid product cycle it makes alot of sense.

Plus its a simple logic board that only needs a few basic commands. This machine would have less processing power than a pocket calculator.
I think you may find the micro controller used in the BDB is a little more capable than that.

Exactly, Phil has also said that the new firmware primarily deals with managing programmed shot volumes at varying rates of flow. It seems Brevilles engineers have been able to better account for varying flow rates in firmware to achieve the correct delivered volume over a wider range of flow rates.

With the new firmware the original machines would be able to do that too.

Imagine the fun we could have if we were able to fiddle with the firmware ourselves? Modding? This would be like the Car Tuning revolution when they introduced EFI and Computers to the engines! 8-)

Fixed that for you....probably part of the reason why there is no usb port  ;D

No, the post on CG was 9th Jan so maybe late 2011?

Another interesting tidbid from Phil that I dont remember seeing on here:

                    http://coffeegeek.com/forums/espress.../559905#559905

I can confirm that there is a firmware update. This primarily deals with managing programmed shot volumes at varying rates of flow. Thats how its related to the OPV. Other parts of the update relate to backend management of small stuff, all the major stuff was well sorted before the software was signed off prior to production.

                    Cheers, Phil
Lemme see here. That quote is from JANUARY and seems specific to the US machine - It is also hinted at in that thread that its got something to do with the power differences between here and there.

In any case - a confirmation of a change made to machines in January - youd expect that we would have had it before then here. There should be a way to find the firmware version from the service menu.

The tablets that came with the machine are available from Breville I believe. Im using Cafetto Espresso Clean powder which I find to be doing a good job. Not sure which sponsor stocks it but they will all have an equivalent.

No doubt there is but Id suggest it would be a bad idea to go poking around in there without knowing what you are doing. Depending on how well things are locked down, the firmware may have the ability to allow you to accidentally change important settings that you will wish you didnt. I know this from spending several hours each week repairing industrial battery chargers that customers felt would benefit from their tinkering with firmware settings.

Here are some Site Sponsors who supply backflushing powders.

I use the Bombora Premium Espresso Machine Cleaner that came with my BDB machine when I got it from Dennis at Cuppacoffee while he was a sponsor.

It will be available from other Sponsors and coffee providers.
