I dont understand how so many machines seem to be doing all this wild stuff
Hi 13, I dont think its actually all that many machines and doubt theres even a concern at Breville HQ given the popularity of the machines. Nonetheless, Im sure its frustrating for those few who are unlucky enough to have things go wrong. I guess the real measure of support is how problems or issues are managed and resolved.

I had a nasty issue where the temperature went up to around 98° and STILL the power light was flashing. This was after I tried to wake it up. It just didnt wake up properly. I tried opening the hot water - but no water flow - or very little. Tried the steam wand - full power. Tried switching off and on again - couldnt fix it.

I sent an email to Phil and had an answer within a minute - turn it off, hold in 1 and 2 cup buttons and switch on - a reset. That worked.

I didnt post here about it as I just went to Breville immediately for the solution.

While this was a 2 second fix for the problen it is another indicator imho that the original firmware may be a little glitchy. What if this sort of boiler runaway happened on an auto start and no one was around to turn it off? Ive not come across an household appliance that needs to be reset to factory defaults to address all these intermittent issues before. As Dennis said it will be interesting to see if/how Breville address these issues for those that are experiencing them.

Just want some opinions on the following:

When pulling multiple shots I tend to rinse the basket under the group head and wipe clean before dosing the next shot.

Im doing this because a lot of coffee grind is usually left behind after banging the puck out and a dry tea towel does not adequately remove the grinds.

Usually after a coffee making session of 2-3 shots I only have enough water left to do a portafilter jiggle and clear water backflush.

I guess I want to know what other people are doing between shots?
And can the left over grinds cause choking if not cleaned properly?

Wow thats a bit of a stretch I think.why assume it has anything to do with firmware. It was just a simple glitch, easily fixed and it hasnt repeated.

I rinse the PF under the tap (sink) and remove basket while I rinse. Put back in group head for next time. Definitely get rid of used grinds before making next coffee. Your technique sounds fine to me.

Left over grinds shouldnt cause choking - just bad taste.

Ive noticed that i get little bits of coffee grind stuck in the basket holes sometimes too.

So yep a rince out mostly cause its easier to give the PF a slosh under water and wash it off.

I use tea towel too wipe it all dry and usually take the basket out to get teh water out, cause i hate getting water drop all in the coffee catcher of the smart grinder if i do few shots.

                  anal i know!

I put in the rubber disc with the double basket single wall filter this morning after making coffee to rinse off the brew head. I noticed that when the pressure built it only got as high as 10 on the guage. I recall reading somewhere that it should be around 12. Is my OPV in need of adjustment?

no 10 is good. 12 is what the old machines where set at and people could elect to have it adjusted down...

Out of interest then how high does the guage read when your making coffee ?

Mine gets to 9.5 with the rubber filter i place, but 12-13 when pulling a shot. Just need to find some time to go and get the opv adjusted....

Does the rubber filter have a hole in the middle of it? If so the 9.5 would be high - I get aroung 6 with the rubber disc and the double wall single basket - my rubber filter has a hole in it.

No it doesnt have a hole. I would have thought that the highest pressure would be reached using the rubber disc rather than when pulling a shot.

The problem I have had is that if I try to grind the beans fine enough to not get coffee coming out until after 11 secs, it is too fine and chokes the rest of the extraction, leading to over 50secs or more to complete a 2 cup shot of 30ml in each cup.

Grind coarser and the coffee tastes weak and lifeless?

I thought maybe it is not building up enough pressure, or the valve is releasing pressure back into the system to early when pulling a shot...

Not that I have a clue what Im talking about...it just sounded logical..?

It could also be your dose.

Make sure the coffee is level with the top of the basket after you tap it a few times and before you tamp it.

Tamp with 15kg pressure and you should just see the top of the silver of the tamper. This is then correctly dosed (will be around 14g of coffee).

Then adjust your grind to get the right flow rate. If it flows too fast grind a bit finer. If too slow, grind courser. But get the dose right and consistent first.

                                ^^^ do wat dave says.
Use your dose as the main tuning, then use the courseness as the fine tuner.
