    Hey guys,
Been a long time reader (especially this bdb post) and while I thought I was doing really well (kind of) with getting consistent pours I have a few questions to ask.
    1. I know alot of you say not to worry too much about the gauge on the bdb but as I was using it and always trying to keep it somewhere around 9 I have only just worked out that when doing a backflush which dual filter and rubber disk it pressurises up to around 11.
Does this mean my OPV needs to be adjusted.

    2. Using roasted beans that I was buying locally and told that they had been roasted no more than 7 days ago I was able to get nice pours which good times around the 35 second mark (8sec pre infusion). I have now started roasting my own beans and beans im using today are 3 days old and Im finding I cant get a good poor anymore. I am 5 clicks right to left on the BCG800. Tamping etc is all good as for the first 2-3 weeks I was tamping on scales to 15kg ish.

I have read this forum up down left and right and to be honest am getting pretty confused so this is why I have asked these questions. Really sorry that they have been asked/answered before.

Beans Im using are the Colombian Volcan Galeras Supremo From BeanBay.

    Thanks Guys

Merlin - nothing wrong with your OPV. Youll need to adjust your grinder for the new beans as I described a few posts up.

        Hey Dave,
Thanks for your help. Its seems that all i needed to do was go one more to the right on the BCG800 and I ended up with a double shot of 39 sec (8sec pre infusion and 2shot auto) which Im happy with.
One other thing I would like to ask is do you and others manually use your grinder for amount or do you have it set. At the moment I have mine set on less 2 and 4 clicks from right side and while it is working I do lose a little bit over the edge of the PF. Is this normal?
        Thankis again

I dont have a Breville grinder - so mine is set to deliver around one shot per button push. I have a little bit of waste.i also adjust it as different beans at different ages require. You really cant set and forget if you want the best result in the cup.

Oh yeah - I just put around 250g of beans in the hopper which lasts me a few days.

Ive got 800 smart grinder and BDB. Everytime i goto a new bean, the amount gets played with, when i get close to the mark i adjust the courseness, so its pretty easy to get close.

                  Hey Dave,
Do you put 250g in the hopper and just leave it there or do you take it out everytime you finish. I only ask this as in this thread somewhere Phil stated that you should not leave your beans in your hopper and when you use it you should make it it has a bit in it so as to have weight in it to push beans through.

I just leave them in the hopper and dont remove them. Thats why I only put a small quantity in at a time. A coffee roaster near me told me to just put a few days supply in and leave it be. Im sure it has a marginal effect but it still tastes great. Trying not to turn making a coffee into a major production. The other option is to just put enough for a shot in at a time but I do see beans flying up when the hopper is nearly empty.

i usually roast 300g or so which converts to about 250gm of roasted and then just fill the hopper with that and when it gets down to the bottom of the middle stem with hte locking handle thing under that tapered hat, i just chuck another 250gm bag in, if the next 1 or 2 shots is a bit mixed up, well doesnt matter, all tastes good

Beans degrade faster when exposed to air and light.
                        ....Just sayin ! ..

if you go through a hopper in a week and the hopper has the lid on so its air tight and out of direct sunlight, do you think its going to be THAT detrimental to the flavour ?

Well yeah - duh - we acknowledged that. It just doesnt seem to effect the taste and we are talking about a few days max.

                                Airtight? I dont think so.
A week! Yes it will be THAT detrimental to your beans.

If youre a snob working at tweaking every variable to make slight improvements toward the god cup, why throw it all out with something as simple as correctly storing your beans?

Your beans, your choice... But its a bad choice.
