    Huey:
There are other factors too, such as the beans your using and how fresh/old they are. How finally ground the coffee is.
If you wanted to do a true experiement then you need to keep every variable the same. Id be interested to see the results.

But use same beans, same grind and same tamp on both baskets, shoot and review. But do both back to back. Let me know if you do it.

    Cheers mate

15kg pressure is recommended for tamping. Try tamping with bathroom scales to get a feel for it. As 13 says you need to keep all variables consistent.

Yup id agree, using Aldi beans at the present time, fresh bag opened up Monday morning (before i picked up the new basket late yesterday arvo) and each shot on original basket didnt seem any different (although the last bag was from the freezer and a few weeks old, i know ive now stopped doing this, into a sealed air tight container in the cupboard it goes, starting with the new bag!)

Anyways, testing /\/ practice ill keep doing and see how i go ;-)

Well its just so you can calibrate your tamp and know what 15kg feels like - I wouldnt leave them on the bench 24/7.

Seeing as you are using stale bags of beans from Aldi, I have a couple of kilo of Lavazza in the cupboard I am never going to use, unopened, if you PM me you can come and pick them up. They have only been there a few months and will be as fresh as any crap from Aldi.

are u using Aldi beans still ?
Thats like buying a ferrari then putting normal ULP in it.. Not that the BES900 is comparable to a ferrari, but why buy such a good machine then put shit beans in it.

Go get some fresh roasted beans ASAP.

Lavazza err, thanks for the thought, pass, work used to have a $24K fully automatic machine they purchased, and Lavazza was your standard coffee bean for it, didnt taste the best...

But LOL and point taken ;D although i do understand its more than a couple of weeks old probably a month of 2 old given manufacturing, shipping, storage etc.

Im working on moving back to fresh stuff in time and money permiting, just found out today my job start date pushed back another week.... almost 4 months off work since 1st March, me thinks better to afford aldi coffee than to drink instant if you cant afford $30 - $40 bags of fresh stuff...

But fear not i wont have much longer to wait then ill be back to fresh stuff again and looking to take your advice on that roaster and green beans, although wife thinks im going crazily overboard on this coffee, im starting to think im sounding like a whack job, ive had and still have too much time on my hands (well at least for another 2 weeks), i fear when i retire in another 20 - 25 years what id be like with more time on my hands than ive ever had in my life....

Thinking to ones self, hmm touring australia like a grey nomad sounds good, having to fit out the camper /\/ motor home with a coffee machine, tad extreme eh would i be... ;D

The supermarket own brands are usually fresher than names like Lavazza - not actually fresh but you can tell the difference.  I bought some Woolies own brand beans recently out of morbid curiousity and they were nowhere near as stale as I expected. There werent fresh as such, but Lavazza, Vittoria, etc. are usually so ancient theyre like mummified coffee while the monopolist brand beans were merely dried out and shiny. So if youre after the lesser of two evils, Aldi might beat Lavazza, but why put yourself through it?

To be honest in my old Saeco fuly auto, the Lavazza beans werent too bad - much better than harris or vittoria etc. A world of difference to the BES900 with fresh beans of course.

Im only trying to find a give-away-home for those 2kb of beans. LOL. I will have to throw them out if no one wants them one day.
