Hmm, so I got given a gift of some illy espresso pods (that fit into the portafilter). Is the DB compatible with these? And which basket to use.. Im assuming the double-wall single basket?

Ha. How about the plactic lined container under your sink? That is compatible.

The BES900 isnt compatible with pods.

This thread appears to have started in Aug 2011 and the last post was also in Aug 2011.
Thats the last post on the first page most probably. Theres 48 pages with lots of activity since it was started.

Aha. Oddly enough my bin isnt actually under the sink.

I dislike wasting coffee, no matter how crappy.

Youre in luck then - illy espresso pods dont qualify as coffee.

Stupid lazy question, tried searching in here but no answers. Does anyone know if retailers carry the naked portafilter? I was all set to order online and then saw $33 postage... thats ridiculous... fair enough if I was buying an item of similar size and weight from the USA... but not locally!

Will try and swing past on my way home tomorrow if so.

I think that no one but Breville will sell you a new naked portafilter for your BDB.

seems many ask this question and Breville gets the same answer.
I think the BES900 needs a permi sticky thread with an FAQ.

ORLY? Any machine that can take a dual floor basket should work with pods, in so far as pods can be considered to work at all.
The BES900 comes with two sizes of dual floor basket so you can use all sorts of pods in it. What the resulting coffee tastes like is another matter. Fossilized I imagine.

Perhaps the BES900 mindset is not compatible with pods?  :

Im sure its not. If pods were compatible Breville would advertise it. Not sure how pods would work in a basket anyway. Do you pierce the pod? Nice plasticky flavor assured. Might improve the illy stale flavour I suppose? ;D

I am making reasonable coffees, though the pucks are coming out too moist and sometimes they stick to the shower screen... perhaps Im using too much coffee and not tamping enough, I shall experiment and look through this thread.
As everyone says, soggy pucks on this machine almost always means underdosing. The machine actually favours overdosing in the conventional sense, as the dual basket takes more than 14g. If you overdose a little the coffee doesnt have room to channel and you will get a sweet looking extraction at normal pressure and a firm dry puck.

Ive found that if you sort of press up and tilt as you remove the portafilter, it unsticks the puck from the head and it drops down into the basket with zero mess and no need to run any water to get it loose. The puck then drops easily out of the basket with no need to bang, leaving nothing behind but a slight trace of oil.

Called a few places anyway and got the same answer as above... I then called Breville directly and was quoted a better price than the website and the postage was only $10 instead of $33. Happy enough with that .
