Usually a double you should aim for 50-60ml in the 20-30 sec range not counting preinfusion and based on what you find tastes best. For me its the upper range so 60ml in 28-30 seconds but I manually stop the shot when it starts to blonde.

Hmmm. I think im getting about 30ml from my double, but the flow is good (starts around 11 sec) and starts to blonde around 27sec...

your grind is too fine then, you are getting channelling by the results you are describing (im assuming you are using fresh beans)

If you check out this post is should cover your questions re dose/grind. What are you using to control dose? Are you using a Smart Grinder?

ah thanks for the info, will do some additional reading today.

re grinding and dosing, i have a sunbeam cafe series grinder and a set of digital scales. basically i would grind 18g of coffee to see how much that actually was before tamping and extracting

hahah yeah... I know Funny thing is I actually read the whole thread an mustve missed that post. Ah well... its out now

I must have one of the new revsions of the smart grinder. Im using fresh Campos Dark City beans and i have it on the lowest grind setting for Espresso. I also find that with it set to 2 shots, I dont actually get nearly enough coffee even when i dial the amount dial right up.

Would it be worth checking to see if there are additional shims and subsequently removing a shim or two (assuming I have the newer revision with extra shims already in?)

Loving my DB! The steam is super impressive, i can really get a top microfoam with this machine, even with the larger jug.

Im finding around 19 or 20g works with the beans im using (boema), but need to get a shim kit to get it another notch down (using the smart grinder). Last extraction was 32mls in 25 seconds (total including pre extraction). Do you contact breville to get the shim kit for their grinder?

                  Hi Jamierk,

Was this in a single basket?

double, but the flow doesnt seem choked or slow. Taste is pretty good. Does anyone have a ball park for how much coffee goes in the single basket?

My only complaint on the machine is that i sometimes get a slight rasping feeling through the handle when removing from the machine after the shot. Its a very odd feeling, not smooth like in the sunbeam i had. Has anyone else felt this? I dont beleive im overdosing, checked with the 5c test and i cant see any wearing or marks on the lugs.

You are grinding too fine already, you should be getting 60mls in 30 seconds (give or take a little bit on both those numbers) from a double basket.

You cant compare two different grinders in that manner unfortunately.

try adjusting it a little coarser and keep your tamp the same, ie: just change one thing at a time.

a double basket should give 60mls in 30 seconds and a single 30mls in 30 seconds.

If you are getting 50 mls in 25 seconds from a double and it tastes better than 60 mls in 30 seconds then go back to what tasted better to you.

Its not an exact science there is at least equal parts art to making good espresso.

I got a bit bored this afternoon (little one is sick) so I decided to pull apart the grinder to discover it had 4 shims already in place.

I pulled out two of the thinner one (there was one thick and three thin ones)... now Im just past the O in Espresso and its grinding the right physical volume of coffee (i.e. not leaving me short after setting it to 2 and no extra amount.

Still fine tuning the tamp (now I can tamp without slamming into the ridge of the basket! ) but I think thats better.

I am finding that if I hit 9bar, its extracting much too fast (22-25 seconds). 11 bar looks to be the sweet spot on my machine in both extraction time and taste

I put this down to the soft seal and clean squeak like fairy liquid gives on plates

I seem to get a much better shot from the breville double basket compared to the breville single basket.

How are others finding the single basket?
