I seem to get a much better shot from the breville double basket compared to the breville single basket.

How are others finding the single basket?
    Hi Lenny.

To be honest, I havent used the single basket as yet. I tend to use the double, and catch/discard if i need to make one single shot cup. Im doing doubles 90% of the time.

Hmmm. I think im getting about 30ml from my double, but the flow is good (starts around 11 sec)
Youve just pulled a double ristretto. Most importantly, how does it taste?

I get the same sort of results and have always liked e taste. I might try increasing the grind size and seeing if the taste is nicer, but it doesnt taste bitter or burnt. Is this typical?

Not burnt or bitter is excellent. ^^ Typical indeed. Sweet, rich, full-bodied and intense. IMHO one of the best ways to sample single origins (darker roasts).

Lol, that was badly worded wasnt it :

I meant is it typical to get good taste in a double basket when pulling shots of only 30ish mls in 25 seconds from a double basket?

Do you contact breville to get the shim kit for their grinder?
You can call customer service but I think some people have been PMing Dave Gubbin for them

Thanks guys, they are on the way. I did try increasing the grind size last night, to the point where i measured out 50mls in 25 seconds on the shot clock (definitely blonded out then). Dont think i was as happy with the taste, perhaps im just very used to the taste from my previous method (30mls in 35 seconds). That is definitely the cool part of the machine, its so much fun to play around with.

Anyone got any thoughts on the inbuild tamper? Have most people gone to upgrade this already? Im not unhappy with the results im getting, but we always like to look for more performance, dont we?

I am using the Bogav tamper that I got from Dennis at Cuppacoffee when I picked up the machine. It has the same size footprint but is heavier and longer and is also held inio the machine by the magnet. I expect that they both do a good job but the Bogav has a better feel.

They are both a better fit than the one with the BES860 "Fresca"

As I did a pickup from the shop I had $50 credit that went towards it.

add me to the list of blokes who doesnt use the single.  its fairly well known in the barista world, that its harder to pull a quality single shot than a double.  i think thats what phil was talking about earlier in the thread when he advised that the way to drink a good single, was to drink half of a double

                            Agreed!

Have dialled in good shots now from my baby! Getting about 19g in the basket, grind is around the S mark for espresso, shots are taking about 28 seconds. Only problem is that I bought quite a dark roast - 5 sense dark horse (cause they didnt have anything left when I turned up ) - and i bought a kilo of the stuff!

Would it be worth checking to see if there are additional shims and subsequently removing a shim or two (assuming I have the newer revision with extra shims already in?)
I got a bit bored this afternoon (little one is sick) so I decided to pull apart the grinder to discover it had 4 shims already in place.

I pulled out two of the thinner one (there was one thick and three thin ones)... now Im just past the O in Espresso and its grinding the right physical volume of coffee (i.e. not leaving me short after setting it to 2 and no extra amount.

Still fine tuning the tamp (now I can tamp without slamming into the ridge of the basket! ) but I think thats better.

I am finding that if I hit 9bar, its extracting much too fast (22-25 seconds).  11 bar looks to be the sweet spot on my machine in both extraction time and taste
Was getting tiny doses at the coarsest espresso setting... terrible pulls shot after shot no matter what...
Took the burr out after reading about a new revision of smart grinder with shims already in, found 5 shims! 1 thick and 4 thin! took a couple out, bit better dose, took ALL shims out, now grinding with the indicator below the r in espresso and getting great 32 second shots.

So why the extra shims???? I wonder how many other consumers will never adventure enough to find they have the same problem.

Just picked mine up today, up grading from a EM 6910 and wow what a difference. Just trying to get the right grind, tamp etc and yes mine also goes up to 11.5 bar when I get a good extraction but hey my Sunbeams gauge went into the red when I got a good extraction too so I guess i must be consistent.
Well done Breville, I just love it!
