Where r u from Rou ? Where did you machine go into for the fix ?

The bloke i took my machine too just wanted my diagnosis on the machine so he will do his. If its just a seal, surely its really not that difficult to replace? There would be no reason why DIY'ers couldnt manage this themselves.

My portafilter now comes off every shot. Forgot about it this morning, as I look under the naked it struck me on the cheek :P

Have you tried taking the shine off the long bottom section of the portafilter lugs with emery paper? It hasn't come off at all since I did mine.

        • Roubaix, are you saying the portafilter only started coming off every shot since the repair?

The problem is if it's a custom part unique to Breville you won't be able to buy it unless an authorized agent is willing to sell one to you. It seems the BDB may become quite expensive to keep running once warranty runs out if things like this need doing routinely. Hopefully the service manual will be "leaked" online somewhere before long.

There may be hope for parts in the future, nothing available at the moment but some nice exploded diagrams if nothing else.

            • Barry: That emery paper trick - you say the BOTTOM side of the lugs? so if the PF is in the machine, the lug side you emery paper is the side pointing to the tray? What grade emery paper did you use? I think I only just understood what you were saying about this as I had previously thought you meant the top side.

I might give this a go subject to your answers.

              • Phil,

It has been said here and else ware that the use of the Breville water tank filter will reduce scale build-up in the machine and lengthen the time until descaling is required.

However the replacement filters are called charcoal-water-filters.

I understand that while it removes many nasties from the water, activated carbon alone will not remove calcium and magnesium to reduce scale formation.

Do the Breville water tank filters only have activated carbon? Or do they also contain something like ion exchange resin to soften the water.

                Barry.

And to add to this- if it doesn't filter out the calcium/magnesium- would it be possible to develop a new filter cartridge (like the claris product) to replace the existing filter as an accessory? Might save a lot of warranty work

                  • With regards to manufacturers warranty, the new(ish) Australian Consumer Law (2011)....
"Commercial law academics say the Australian Consumer Law largely makes extended warranties redundant, as consumers will often have legal protection against defects in the goods beyond the manufacturer's normal warranty anyway."

I think it was 100C wet and dry.
I gave a light sanding to lower edge, not the ramp, of the portafilter as it fits in the machine. Just enough to take off the shine.

                        • Argus, yes it's only come off after service. Maybe they used a cleaning product. Phil previously mentioned cleaning products may make the portafilter come off mid shot.

Barry, I did read your earlier post. Thanks for providing more info. Will try if I can't try and wipe it off.

Mine out of the box did that, you just need to lock it in harder. I have to hold the handle to prevent it coming out.

                              • Not sure if I should start a new thread here or continue this one.....

Anyway, my question is, where can I buy a bes900 portafilter. Either the naked one or a "fully clothed" one is fine. Even a pre-owned one is OK.
