  • You can probably use those beans now - they will change flavour as they age and you will know the optimal bean age for your palate.

You can get the cleaning tabs from Breville direct by calling them - or really any cleaning tabs will do the job.

Backflushing is totally different and should be done daily. Put the dualwall single basket in the PF along with the silicon disc. Press and hold the 2 cup button while you jiggle the pf around - not locked in - this washes the shower screen. If you have a grouphead brush you can also then scrub the seal and shower screen and do the PF jiggle again holding the 2 cup button in.
Next, lock the PF in with the silicon disc still in place and press and hold the 2 cup button till it comes up to9bar (or less if your silicon disc has a hole in it) Release button. Repeat 5 times.

    • Thanks DavidW1960,

Great advice and very much appreciated.

I did try reading through this thread looking for the answers but there are so many posts here it would have taken forever, Thanks again for explaining it so easily for me.

cpss, welcome to the BDB club.

I use Clean Machine powder from Bombora. It came with my machine package.
Use one of the specific back flushing powders or tablets, such as Clean Machine, Cafetto or Breville. Don’t use a descale cleaner for the back flush.

As your coffee beans age you will have to grind finer.

        • I have to ask, what on earth is this 'jiggle' thing?

To backflush I just lock in the blind (dual wall with silicon disk if you don't have a blind) and hold the 2 cup button for 10 seconds, do that a few times and that's it.

I'll find Phil's instructions and post them again cps Phil is the guy from Breville.

          • Here is Phil's instructions again for all the newbies

Heres my standard procedure for cleaning:

After each session: "clear water back-flush"

            Insert blind filter into PF.
            Insert into group head
Press & hold the 2 cup button for 10 secs, repeat 4-5 times
run PF under hot water & wipe out.

            Every Kg or so

Clear Water Back-flush as above, then
1/2 scoop caffeto or similar into blind filter
            insert into group head
press & hold 2 cup button for 60secs
            allow to "soak" for 60secs
press & hold 2 cup button for 10 secs, repeat 4-5 times
            repeat clear water back-flush
soak PF (head only, not the handle) in solution of Caffeto & hot water for 10mins, rinse after

            Cheers, Phil

                Backflush - YouTube

I have been doing this after each coffee session, with the jiggle, since I saw this video. I use a plastic blind filter insert I got from Coffee Parts.

                Cleanliness is next to Godliness.

When you do a successful back flush with a blind filter you can hear a short hiss when the 3 way valve opens. If you take the lid off the drip tray you can see it flow in.

                • As per earlier replies, i was getting no flow from the grouphead at all.

Based in Adelaide so dropeed it into Ivesons electrical and straight away the guy goes "that'll be the o'ring". I was told it should take about a week. A week exactly i picked up the machine yesterday. The o ring was the issue plus the guys mentioned that they had replaced the "probes" as they had been asked by Breville to do this on the earlier machines and weren't sure whether mine had been done or not. Excuse my ignorance but i'm not sure which probes they were referring to and i was way to keen to get home and make a brew than stand around and talk!!! Has anyone else heard of these being replaced?

Got the machine home and it's back running like a dream!! Life can return to normal again.........

I'm assuming that's supposed to say 10 seconds, like the rest of the instructions.

FWIW, I dont hold it for more than 5 seconds. I just wait until the thing hits max pressure and I let go of the button.

Nic mentioned the water level probes and build-up of scale, at his 2593 reply on page 52 of this string. These would be probes for the automatic water level control of the boilers.

                      • I was happily steaming my milk this morning. I stretched the milk until about 30 degrees and then submerged the tip of the wand to heat it up. Then at about 50 degrees the milk started to stretch further with the wand tip submerged as if air was coming in mixed with the steam. When I finished I cleaned the wand and checked the steam. It was coming out only from one hole, so I unscrewed the tip and looked for a blockage. Light came through the three wholes and everything seemed perfectly clean inside. I screwed the tip back in and steam came from the three wholes (although it looks as if it come with more power from one of them, might be because of my point of view).

Do I need to worry? Have you had any similar experience?

                        • It looked like only two holes were working on mine too. I used the cleaning tool over and over to no avail. Turns out the 3rd hole was working all along but just pumping out pure steam with no water vapour so was totally invisible.

What you described is correct. I guesses you had opened up your machine lid to see inside of it. Is it more fun?
Science needs observations, experiments and practicing. You can not answer others' questions based on the imagination.
Maybe we can really discuss the issues with more facts of the machine's design when your machine warranty expires.

                            Cheers

Looks like everyone should get this done and next we should pressure breville into fixing the stuck puck rubbish. It's starting to piss me off...

Weather it be single basket used or double, weather i add more coffee or less coffee EVERYTIME it sticks and it even happens on the BES900BX? The american model. Other machines with a solenoid valve doesnt do it so the BES900 shouldnt either. Breville should fix this.

I'm actually calling the customer care team tomorrow to try and get the ball rolling.. We should all do the same thing!
