If you have any problems with your BDB in Melbourne, I suggest you contact Brervilles Factory outlets at:

      427 Smith Street
      Fitzroy VIC 3265
      Telephone - (03) 9417 7126

      Or

      261 Huntingdale Road
      Huntingdale VIC 3166
      Telephone - (03) 9543 8199

Breville suggest that we may need a descale after about 3 years and say we should take it to them.

Alternatively when out of warranty we should work out how to do it ourselves. We would need a way to empty and flush all descale chemicals out of the pumps, pipes and boilers.

FYI, I called the Smith St outlet but unfortunately they don't have anyone there who can do the actual adjustment.

You are wrong about this. Many if not all BDB's have a tendency to do this even when new. There's lots of posts about this in this thread

I'm not even sure this is true any more. Several months after Arty's quote above, Phil posted some microscope pics of the VST versus the Breville over on CG, and the Breville baskets holes and spacing looked every single bit as good as the VST. In fact a small consensus of us over at CG thought that if anything, the Breville was even better than VST. At least two VST owners (both of them either scientist or engineers), switched back to the Breville baskets after they bought VST's.

Produced my finest shot on the BDB this morning. An Ethiopian Harrar from Industry Beans, five days from roast. 40sec extraction including pre infusion producing 40ml from 18.5g of beans. Incredible aroma and flavour of blueberry, and a very balanced, creamy sweet fruited palate. Oh yum!

My portafilter did not start falling off until I began running a water backflush after each use. I think the lugs get wet when doing "Phil's wiggle". Then the 10.5bar achieved with a blind filter do push the portafilter out of place. A couple of days ago I overdose the basket and the shot started to come at 10bar, and the portafilter fell off. It was the first time that this happened to me while actually brewing a shot. I didn't like that, so I followed DavidW1960 advise. Just a little scratching on the bottom of the lugs has made the trick. Now the portafilter stays in place even when backflushing.

Many thanks to everyone -and to David in particular- for being such an excellent source of advice. The BES900 is about the best purchase I have ever made.

                      Hi,

I forgot that the machine comes with a 2 year warranty. I purchased mine last year (Oct 2012). Coffees have been mostly pretty good. Just a couple of weeks ago the machine seems to have no pressure (have trolled through the site and found similar issues). I try backflushing (with just dual wall single basket and plastic insert + press and hold 2 cup button). Pressure gauge is not moving at all :-( Hardly any water flow. I used to get water overflow when I released the portafilla but now not getting that.

When making coffee, I am now sometimes finding that the preinfussion starts - around 10sec - then the pressure builds up to about 3-4 bar and sits there until approx 20 sec. then it may go to 9 (or more). Other times pressure stays at around 3-4 bar after preinfussion.

Even went back to the coffee shop and asked him how often he roasts (he said weekly) - thinking it may be my coffee is stale.

Any other tests I can do to check if it is a pressure issue? Otherwise, I'll keep trolling through the site and then call Breville!

                      =F.

Thank you and yes, I feel 100% accurate in saying that YES, when doing a back water flush and moving the portafilter around DOES make a form of connection loose on the shower screen / portafilters connection.

I don't recommend doing the back flush and if you want to stuff your machine up then yes, do it. In saying that though get ready to take it down to a service repair centre soon after doing them.

Since getting mine back from repair i've not done one and since then not 1 portafilter has come off.

                        • Frangutz,

I had a similar problem to you as have several others here.

I rang Breville and they said my nearest service centre was at Hornsby. I asked if I could take it to their Ultimo Factory Outlet where I knew they have a fix it man. They said that I could.

I rang the mechanic at Ultimo and he said he had replaced faulty O rings that had reduced water flow in several machines.

I took my machine to Ultimo where it was fixed within one day. He also adjusted my over pressure valve.

4 days ago Rustic told us that there is no mechanic at the Smith St Fitzroy Factory Outlet.

I believe that the replacement O rings and the ones used in the latest machines are better quality and are unlikely to perish.

                          Barry

If you don't back flush, how are you keeping your machine's innards clean? You do understand how the machine works, and the vital importance of regular clear water back flushes, and occasional (monthly for me) chemical back flushes?

I am running a water back flush after each session and a chemical back flush every kilo of coffee or so. The PF stays in place once I slightly scratched the lower part of the lugs with sand paper.

Sorry Tupinamba. The question was directed at neofelis, as I think he is advocating not back flushing. I also scratched the lower lugs early on and have no problem with the PF coming loose. Need to clean PF well after chemical back flush as well, as the chemical makes everything slippery.
