No idea Doc as I am yet to receive it. I understand that it was some sort of fail to proceed after a few days of use.

              One happy little vegemite ;D ;D ;D

Unpacked my baby Bes900 & smartie grinder this afternoon and I must say WOW it worked like charm no probs so far.

I really dunno what Im doing just following the manual. All I ever wanted in a machine was to make a latte that tastes better than the nespresso pods that I enjoy at the hairdressers and the Gloria Jeans I go to.

Im so over the moon cant believe how easy this machine is to use.

Oh and the grinder was perfect no need to shimmy it up. Ok back to playing with my baby.

              Peace x :-*

              Have fun yall

It was me, mind you the upside to it all was a relatively easy exchange process though the retailer insisted on testing it out on the bench and had the same problem.

Have had the new machine for 3 days now, retailer gave me a bag of Toby estate beans that are probably overdue now but gave me the chance to play and dial the smart grinder and machine in.

Getting nice poursbon the double basket but cant get the single to work for the li of me! Pressure gauge is showing 12bar + but apart from some bitterness, it aint too bad. Need to get some fresh beans to try.

Finally got my microcosm technique down as well, loving the instant steam.

                Chuffed with the machine!

Mods... you might want to consider starting up a new topic for "Microscosm Techniques"

                        Hi Guys (and Gals)
Have been using the Breville BES900 and grinder BSG800 for just over two weeks now and have watched this thread with much interest. Have to say I am more than happy with this combo, I still have my Sunbeam EM6910 and EM0480 which has served me well for the past four years and was happy with some of the good coffee it produced. But now it has gone to a new level with the Breville after I found the sweet spot with the grind. Using fresh beans (less than ten days from roast) the grinder is set on the second last bar from the end of the display and the coffee tastes as good, no even better than the shots my mate gets out of his Butterfly. Now thinking I may be a candidate for a slight shim upgrade in the grinder to allow for different beans. Having said that I am reluctant to alter anything until I have to.....

Pensioneron, how long do your shots run for? I start to get blonding around the 25sec mark, but shots are pretty good.

howser 29 seconds with no blonding and have been using Alan Frews LAC blend. Gdaughter just dropped some Columbian in to try and will update after I try this, have found in the past with different beans on the Sunbeam I sometimes had to alter the grind slightly.

                              Hi all,

Bought our machine yesterday and did all the housework on it today so tomorrow we brew! My only worry now is with the grinder we have, it is a La Cimbali MD Domus and we have had it for quite a few years and although it has not had much use I am afraid it might be past it.
Should we get a smart grinder (or something even better) or stick with the Domus? I am not a coffee connoisseur (or even a Snob) so I might not realise that our brew is not the optimum and a better grinder might make it better.

Also, is bottled Spring water suitable for the machine?

After reading what Guru Phil has posted in the last couple of days, I think Im happy with my current shim status. My smart grinder had 5 shims (1 thicker, 4 thinner) from factory, but Ive taken 3 of them out. My current blend (Dark City from Campos) leaves me at about the 5th tab from the RHS and I did notice that when I went to a Single Origin (El Salvador from Campos) i had to dial down the grind a couple of notches to suit (which makes logical sense).

Depending on the darkness of the roast, you may already be in a good position to allow for coarser grinds for different roasts. Guru Phil mentioned the sweet spot in a couple of posts above, and that when you pop over 8-9 on the scale the dose changes (on the original couple of hardware revisions).
