Now thinking I may be a candidate for a slight shim upgrade in the grinder to allow for different beans. Having said that I am reluctant to alter anything until I have to.....
After reading what Guru Phil has posted in the last couple of days, I think Im happy with my current shim status.  My smart grinder had 5 shims (1 thicker, 4 thinner) from factory, but Ive taken 3 of them out.  My current blend (Dark City from Campos) leaves me at about the 5th tab from the RHS and I did notice that when I went to a Single Origin (El Salvador from Campos) i had to dial down the grind a couple of notches to suit (which makes logical sense).

Depending on the darkness of the roast, you may already be in a good position to allow for coarser grinds for different roasts.  Guru Phil mentioned the sweet spot in a couple of posts above, and that when you pop over 8-9 on the scale the dose changes (on the original couple of hardware revisions).
Had to back off four notches for the Columbian before I got an acceptable shot and it was still not as good as my initial ones with the other beans and on the auto 2 shot dose it definately overdosed.

Thats about how many I had to change going from the blend to the single origin and back again. All beans < 1wk post roast.

Getting nice poursbon the double basket but cant get the single to work for the li of me!
not surprising. singles are well known to be much harder to get right than doubles. most baristas dont even bother with singles... it takes enough skill to get a double done right as it is.

          Hi all,

So i did mod number 1 - remove plastic base from portaflilter. When trying tp re screw on the spouts i have found that whatever i do they always end up facing the wrong way when fully tightened - ie they are at the back of the PF rather than under the handle. Can anyone tell me what stupid thing im doing?!

I am getting a great brew from both the single and double baskets. Single walled of course. Just need to fiddle with the grind, dose and tamp and of course use the best coffee beans you can get.

Today I am using Andys Sulawesi Toarco Jaya and Bolivia Green Mountain. Yum O. roasted to perfection in my popper, close to 2nd crack.

I find it better to slightly underdose.

My pressure gauge is consistantly at about 12 and the coffee is great.

A bit of plumbers tape around the thread should do the trick.

i found with mine i needed quite a bit of turning force to get it to line up. It was hard to remove, and equally hard to screw back. Shouldnt need any plumbers tape??

a bottomless portafilter would fix those issues up, no worries its the only way I roll anymore.

I had the same problem, and I thought to myself "I mustve lost a washer or something". I hunted and hunted, and couldnt find anything. So I ended up getting a small plumbing o-ring and putting it over the thread, and then screwing the spout back on. This gave me enough play to be able to screw it to the right angle. About ten minutes after id done all this, I noticed something shiny on the kitchen floor. AHA! The missing washer. I took it all apart again, installed that (tiny!) flat washer, and hey presto, all was good.

The short story is: youre missing a very small, flat washer. Look around.

Yeah i thought that must have been the case when i couldnt figure it out, so i had a really good search around but couldnt find anything. There is still one u shaped washer that is in there ie. the edges of the washer are curved up, that was obviously already there. Do you guys have that and another washer?

For anyone that would ever doubt what this machine is capable of you just need to look at the results.

Mexican Yeni Typica roasted 4 days ago on the I-Coffee Roaster.

Could anyone do a video of what they consider to be their perfect pours and the result in the cup?

Its no good looking at a great coffee, you have to taste it.

There is only one way to judge a pour by looking, (IOW, before tasting), and that is with a naked/bottomless portafilter. If it coagulates in the middle, has food tiger striping, and most important, doesnt spritz, I know ahead of time that it will also taste good. OTOH, with a regular portafilter, you can never be quite sure about the pour until you taste it. Although with the control of the non-shot-prep-related variables that a machine like the BDB gives you, odds tip significantly in our favor. Looking forward to mine.
