Thanks for the reply I have had a look at the website but it gives no indication on whether the 22g will fit the Breville portafilter? Can anyone confirm this? What difference does a ridgeless basket make? Also a recommended place to buy from? Thanks again

try asking vst of the 22g fits the stock breville pf. also try to search online for "triple basket" but this one needs a naked pf. no difference between the ridgeless and ridge, its just the pf holding the basket with the wire, the ridge holds tightly. but it dont mean the ridgeless is loose, im using a ridgeless and its still tight

      • I just picked up the Breville BES900XL and I"m having issues with it, whenever I select a double shot I only get a 1oz shot. Additionally I can't seem to get the bar to reach 10. I'm using the Single Wall Filer with 16 grams of fresh ground coffee, espresso ground. I've tried adjusting the ground and even the pressure of the tamper with no luck. I've tried selecting a manual shot and get larger shots but no within the 10 bar range or time range of 25-30 sec for a 2 oz shot. I can clearly see that the filter is not blocked and I have run out of ideas, can someone please shed some light on this thanks!

Does it reach the ~10bar range with your cleaning disc in the single?
Which grinder are you using? I ask because some grinders that have 'espresso' as a setting, well, don't work well.As wonderful as the BES900XL is, it can not overcome an inadequate grinder.

Does 16g tamp down so that the line on the Breville tamp is where it should be? Because it could be that with such a low dose you're tamp is hitting the slope of the basket. Try 18g or whatever gets your line at the rim of the basket.

As for the volume, that does sound low. The buttons are programmable but still, the 2 shot button should be set. Just for grins, hit the 2 shot button with no espresso in the basket and see how much water comes out. The 1 shot button should be putting out that volume. Or close to it.

          You'll get it sorted out.

prescottcr is correct the double shot is minimum of 18g its in the manual. dose and tamp with the correct grind should restrict the pressure that should hit the 9.5 and not 10.

are you using pregrind coffee or are you grinding them yourself with what grinder?

to check if machine is pulling with a correct pressure, use a single shot double wall basket with the blind filter, then hit manual, the pressure should hit the 9.5bar - give us your reading on this

            • hi all, got a question. when i first have my bdb the pressure guge for blind filter was 10.5. today, 5 mths later it dropped to 9.5, should i be concerned? just wondering why it does that...

i still can get extraction at 9-9.5 bar just a bit worried if any parts are on the verge of giving way... >.>

                1. 10.5 using blind basket is not good, pressure should be just 9.5
                2. proper extraction is 8-9.5 so you are still doing ok
                3. ask breville regarding this situation hehehe many factors comes into play

i'll be posting my scenario which is something a bit related

                • here is my scenario

                  1. using single shot dual wall basket with a blind filter - gauge reads 9.5 bar
                  2. using single shot single wall basket with a blind filter - gauge hits 9.5 bar then drops and stays at 8 bars

is there any problem with the machine or pump or opv?

Hey I'm new to this and have just got the BES900 so I'm certainly no expert, but you can manually adjust volume for each button - check in the manual. Perhaps, for whatever reason, it was set wrong from the factory?

You could to a factory reset too and see if that solves it.

                    • Thanks everyone for the helpful responses. After much tinkering around and many headaches I think I've figured it out. First I adjusted the pressure I was pushing down on the tamper, I was doing it to softly in order to reach the 10 bar range it really needs to be pushed down hard. Additionally I went into the manual mode so the shots would pull longer, the 2 shot button out of the box is bugged or something, I even tried a factory reset on the machine with no success the shots would stop way short like in the 1oz or lower range. The only bad thing is after I programed the 2 shot button it doesn't seem to hold it in memory for very long so I'm having to go back later on and re-time my shots all over again. Anyway I've managed to get a 10 bar pressure reading in a close 2 oz portion like a double shot should be, but the shot time wasn't in the correct range from 25-33 sec. was more like in the 20sec rage timed from the point of seeing the first flow of espresso.

                      • Good you've found a work around Radtech51, but it sounds a bit odd - if it's a new machine I would be taking it back.

Your pump would have the ability to pump to 15 bar, however the maximum is reduced by the OPV in your and my machine to 9.5. The actual pressure depends on the resistance to flow by a blind filter or the coffee puck in the basket. You can adjust the flow and pressure by changing the grind fineness, dose amount and tamp pressure, not by adjusting the machine.

The pressure is not as critical as the temperature and good coffee can be made anywhere between 8 to 12 bar. The big test is how it tastes in the cup.

If your pressure drops during a pour it could be due to channelling.

hi barry my concern is with a single basket and blind the pressure hits 9.5 then drops and stays at 8bar, is this normal, isnt the blind suppose to be a representation of a perfect seal/puck or not? what factors do you mean when you say channelling?

                            thanks

                            • Channeling happens in an espresso puck when water finds an easier way through and the rest of the puck doesn't get extracted.

With a blank, there is no channeling. The pressure should never drop with a blank. It should max out and stay there. At worse you'll see the needle waver a little, but at most 1/4-1/2 bar. If you're dropping from 9.5 to 8 with any blank in it, then there's a problem. Is the pressure staying at 8 or is the needle violently fluctuating from 9.5 to 8 and back quickly? If it is than my guess is the OPV. If not, I'm not sure what it is.

i do hope its chanelling, as its hard for me to get the machine for service. when the pump kicks in after pre infusion it hits 9.5 and then drops to 8 bar and stays there. it doent fluctuate or move
