  • I have the new /B model in the US. The new portafilter has a new thicker, less tapering flange. I have posted a picture of the difference at coffeegeek.com in the Breville dual boiler owners thread - my older cut portafilter is on the top and the new design is on the bottom. . It locks in VERY TIGHT and will not spin out. I believe that if you were able to just get the /b model portafilter on the BES900, this alone would solve the slippage problem. The grouphead that the portafilter screws into appears to be the same in both models.

    • attached is a picture of the two portafilter designs - per the previous post. above is the older design and below is the new /B design I believe if you get a /B portafilter it will solve the slippage problem without getting a new machine. I am not sure if Breville redesigned the grouphead, bit when I screw in the older portafilter it feels the same as the older machine.

      • The portafilter seems to slip after one or two shots, as moisture builds up on the ridge that the lugs sit on. After nearly cracking a pair of $50 Noritake cups (!!!) I've just started holding the portafilter gently during the first few seconds of the shot; you can feel if it starts to slip and just hold it in position. If it doesn't slip in the first few seconds (of full pressure, not during the pre-infusion) it doesn't seem to slip for the rest of it.

Earlier in the thread some users had luck gently sanding the portafilter lugs to make a rougher surface that helped/resolved the slipping problem.

        • Check out the photos ocoffeefan posted on coffee geek. The lugs are very different now.

If you're like me, keep it clean (as Steve82 pointed out as well), do NOT over-dose the basket, and you'll be fine.

          • I can now confirm the design of the grouphead is the same on the /b model and the older model. I took the new /b portafilter to Sur La Table and screwed into their older Breville Dual Boiler. It screwed in tight. For those who have spinout problems it appears all you need is the new /b portafilter to solve the problem.

              • G'day all,

My BDB will have a second birthday shortly. I have had several spinouts, once breaking a glass coffee cup. I usually make my macchiatos in an unbreakable metal cup.

Last weekend I brewed about 50 coffees for friends with one spinout.

I took the shine off the bottom side of the PF lugs with emery paper and I think it helps it to stick. I find it more likely to move during a pour just after using cleaning powder and when totally blocked with a blind filter.

My BDB continues to make great coffee. It is me, not the machine that is the cause of crap coffee from time to time if the coffee beans are too old or young or the grind, dose or tamp is out of wack.

I mostly use the single shot basket in a naked portafilter.

                • If you don’t want the hassles of making coffee on a manual machine like the BDB or a Silvia, get a super auto or pod machine where the results will be consistent. That is consistently inferior. That’s what I think.

                  • Here is a link to the picture of the older breville portafilter vs the new /b. The older design is on top ( my older cut portafilter and the newer /b design is on the bottom. Note that the flanges taper less on the new design.

I had a look at your picture, thank you for that. So far I only had the slippage problem happen once, so probably too early to complain to Breville, but... I have purchased a naked PF, just checked, it has the same tapered flange as the normal one. Should the problem repeat itself, what do you think my chances would be of having the naked PF repaced under warranty as well? The machine is not yet two months old, the naked PF only about a month.

BTW, just wondering (as some of the other things aren't the same here in Oz) could someone with a B version here in Oz confirm that the flange had been changed, please. I would really appreciate it.

Unfortunately , no .It seems that some things were rectified on our American friends XL models but not here .My B model was manufactured in Nov 12 and It's still the same . Having said that , it's only a minor problem to me .My PF spun out once so I did the emery paper trick posted here and all was well . Couple of weeks later I ordered the naked , forgot about it , and out it came ,emery again and it's been fine ever since .Same with the water bypassing the trip tray . Someone early in this thread posted a quick fix with some tape , I done that and you can't even see it .
I know there are some saying we should not have to do that, put up with that , on a brand new machine , and they are right to .But I love this machine and the good points far outweigh those two easily fixed problems.

                        • Hi everyone, long time lurker first time poster.

Bought myself a black dual boiler last weekend along with a smart grinder. So far loving the combo. Huge improvement over my old Sunbeam EM3600. After using a Diadema Junior at work for the last couple of years i couldn't stand the little Sunbeam any more.

That is really peculiar. My machine was manufactured in Dec 12 and is definitely not the B model!
