Im not suggesting that there is no improvement.  Im just suggesting that part of the improvement might be about perceptions.
So you not going to bother getting yours adjusted?

The fact remains that Breville are promoting the fact that this machine does 9 bar extractions. I picked up a brochure at my local retailer yesterday and it promotes this fact heavily, featuring a photo of the pressure gauge reading 9 bar, and numerous explanations of why 9 bar extractions are important.

        the OPV is adjusted
If the OPV is unimportant, why do they bother including it?

          another informal survey question...

who here is using a grinder OTHER THAN Brevilles Smart Grinder?

(strangely, only a couple of you have removed the plastic disc from the portafilter... either that or only a couple of you answered when I asked)

I guess Phil has been touring the US doing some demos over there, which might explain his absence in these parts over the past few weeks. I found some photos over on the Breville USA facebook page from the launch last week.

I thought this photo was particularly interesting.

you might be better of asking who hasnt taken it out and why not

Interesting that I had a client last week who had this on her short list (she ultimately decided on a Diadema). The Breville had been discounted because shed tried some butchered stale muck in a demo at one of the majors and was of the opinion that it made terrible coffee. It was nice to prove her wrong.

I sometimes wonder just how much damage a demonstration by such an eggspurt can do to a brand... :

I like Toastys picture post above. Obviously breville is pushing the 9bar feature very hard.

I spoke to breville today and Im getting my OPV tuned tomorrow. Hopefully a bit less than the 12-13 bar Im getting currently.

I had my OPV adjusted today at J&T Electrical in Ashburton Vic. The extraction pressure, after pre-inf, goes to 10, then drops to 9.5, which is good enough for me.
Had to adjust the grind slightly, only one click.
                          So far very happy .

9 bar is an industry standard for professional equip including E61 type equipment, hence explains brevilles pushing the 9bar feature.

The big question is.. do you think there is a difference in the cup?

Im expecting very minimal if any taste change at all apart from a bit better mouthfeel and body in my shots, I would say milk drinkers would never notice the difference but I may be wrong.

My silvia was running at 11.5 when I adjusted to roughly 9 using Greg Pullmans gauge which may not be dead accurate but it was good enough to change and the result was what I described above.

Mine will be adjusted next week. Props to Breville for allowing anyone to have this done, all you have to do is call!

Lets be clear on this. I think it fair to say that 9 bar is preferred in Australia. I dont know that there is a standard, and if we lived in Italy, all our espresso machines would be more likely set to 12 bar.
