In the context of measuring output, yes. Not so with volumetric delivery (which I'm assuming we're talking about here).Originally posted by PrescottCR View PostVolume depends on so many factors it's really not a good idea to rely on them. Use the manual start/stop and if you really want to be accurate, use a scale and weigh the espresso.

Sorry if this has been answered in the many pages of this forum...
I am having a few problems with my (just over) 2 year old BES900.
Symptoms as follows (all intermittent faults)...
1 Temperature exceeding the shot temperature setting on the LCD interface (my setting 93 degrees, actual temperature on display 94 - 100 degrees; machine unable to extract when over temperature displayed)
2 On two occasions, machine unable to turn on at all (nil display, no operation possible)
I have had the machine returned three times to the Seaford (Melbourne South East area) Breville authorised service agent. He has upgraded various parts of the machine to current specifications, but the machine works fine for a short while then faults again.
Once now the BES900 has been returned to the Sydney service centre, but once again, works fine for a short while then intermittently faults.
I am not at all happy with the reliability of this machine.
Has any other owner of this machine experienced similar problems?

I wouldn't be happy either. I'd say you have been patient enough, you obviously got a lemon, should demand a replacement.Originally posted by lotsofcoffee View Post

You got me worried now, I don't have your problems, but was about to call the service people, as the PF keeps flying off (the other day it flew off, I cleaned everything, making sure I cleaned the lugs, started another shot and that flew off too!) but I live just near Seaford, so no doubt that's where they'd send me as well!

Try ringing them, demand they send you the newer PF with the larger more square lugs.Originally posted by csutak40 View PostI wouldn't be happy either. I'd say you have been patient enough, you obviously got a lemon, should demand a replacement.

I can tell you for a fact they exist, cause I have one. Its so tight I can barely get to 6 O'clock

Well - to be honest - that sounds normal, up to the point that it never stops! Mine does the same on cold start-up - and I think it is the little pump which fills up the steam boiler. You will hear it kicking in after using the steam wand. Sometimes (when the @!#$@#%!*ing PF doesn't spin out and takes out half the suburb to the left of the machine) I can hear it along with the extraction head pump.Originally posted by donaldallen View PostMy Dual Boiler is about 6 months old now. I just made two latte's for visitors. On the third, the machine started making a loud buzzing noise. The noise wouldn't stop. I turned the machine off, let it sit for half an hour, turned it back on and bam, the noise is still there. If I run the hot water valve for about 10 seconds, the noise will stop for a few seconds after turning the water off, but it returns.
Here's a video: Breville Dual Boiler loud buzzing noise - YouTube
Any ideas what might be wrong?
I am not too clear on how exactly it works (i.e. sensing how full the steam-boiler is), but if it keeps going on-and-on it could be any of the following:
*) damaged pump - cannot create pressure,
*) leaky tubes - cannot create pressure (you'd see water pouring out though)
*) faulty sensor(s) - cannot figure out how full the boiler is
*) faulty logic-board - rather unlikely, but an option.
Of course - this is just a stab in the dark - your best option is to take it to the repair-shop - none of the parts inside are user-serviceable. And there's a real and present risk of mixing water and electricity.

That's encouraging! I thought they only exist in the US!Originally posted by Steve82 View PostTry ringing them, demand they send you the newer PF with the larger more square lugs.

I hope you have one of the machines which has a snug fitting portafilter, I'd hate your daughter to get a nasty surpriseOriginally posted by dr.a.j.pickering View PostThought I would let you know how easy the bes900 is to use, just had a very good flat white made by my 8 year old daughter unsupervised (furthers day)

I'm indoctrinating my just turned 3 year old son already that instant coffee isn't real coffee :-)
He enjoys smelling the freshly ground beans and pushes the buttons for me on my BES900, he knows his numbers so we both watch the pressure gauge and wait for it to reach 9 bar of pressure :-)

My machine was almost 2 years old & was having intermittent problems which were becoming more frequent. The machine had already been fixed by the service centre about 6 months ago & Breville had told me to take it in again for another go. I decided to take it back to the retailer instead and see what they could do. They were very helpful & replaced the machine for a new one. Very happy with the new machine, the pump sounds completely different, not sure if it's because the old one was faulty or if they are using a different pump now (the replacement is a BES900/B).Originally posted by lotsofcoffee View PostSorry if this has been answered in the many pages of this forum...

I went from a position of never buying another Breville product again to now giving them another go. It would be good if the call centre had the ability to give a replacement for recurring issues.
