Hi all, this week my wand started making a ticking noise... It has only been barely noticeable once the machine has come up to operating temp... I think it must have a slow leak?? Is this a common issue and has anyone experienced this?

Breville BES900 Dual Boiler - Owners thread

I have had it happen from time to time, to me it sounds like a small amount of air / pressure leaking. A quick flick of the lever and it stops. I have also had the odd drip here and there, but nothing that even remotely resemble a continuous leak so I do not worry and just keep making exceptional espresso and milk drinks.
If anything major ever goes wrong within the warranty period I would probably just add this " problem " on for good measure then.

Haven't been on here for a while but wants to briefly share my experience with Breville, and the BES900. I got one of the very first of these, in Sept 2011. Made great coffee from day 1 (once I sorted the grind out). Couple of months in I lost all pressure in the group head - no water coming out. Contacted Phil McKnight and he kindly organised a complete replacement machine sent from Breville. Approximately 9 months later, on the 2nd machine, same issue. This time couldn't contact Phil so instead went through the customer service section - short story is they again completely replaced the machine, although this time through my place of purchase. Upon first turn off of the third machine it came up with an error message ERR1. No buttons would work or functionality of any kind - had to turn the unit off at the power. Given my not get reliability run, since the rest of it worked fine I held on to it and just had the inconvenience of every now and then (about 1 in 4) having to turn the unit off at the power point because of the ERR1 message.
Someone commented earlier in this thread about a metal on metal sound occurring during cleaning phase? This too happened to my machine, and also occurred on several instances during Normal shot extraction. Nt a reassuring sound that's for sure. Again, given my reliability issues, I thought it was time to contact Breville.
After explaining my unfortunate reliability run of having 3 machines with significant issues, I was eventually put on to Kumar in Botany, who agreed to send me a replacement BES920 due to the bad run I'd had.
I found that very time I needed to contact Breville regarding an issue they responded extremely fairly. Congratulations to Breville, and in particular Kumar and the other individuals who were involved for being so reasonable.
To be honest I expected this kind of service after buying their flagship espresso machine (although there's now a newer flagship model) but have also had experiences with other retail companies who don't want to know you if a problem crops up with their product.
BTW - several of my friends, who bought a BEs900 on my recommendation or after tasting my coffee have not had any issues with their machine at all.

I browse here at times looking for info and my recent experience with Breville is worth conveying to all. I was using a Quick Mill Andreja Premium and high end grinder for a few years but really got tired of the noisy, messy, and difficult to master setup. I sold this setup and purchased a BES900 when first introduced in the states and a Vario grinder. So much quieter! I really wanted that temp control and dual boilers! It was one of the early machines with erroneous overpressure valve setting. Anyway, other than that, I was very pleased with the Breville and just learned to live with the pressure as it was.
So, here it is, about 27 months later and I finally emailed Breville and issued a complaint about a leaky water spout, overpressure setting, and sometimes very noisy operation, which I always thought might be a mounting issue with the motor. I enquired about doing some self service, if possible. I really wanted to stop that water spout leaking. It wasn't a show stopper so much as it was annoying. I was even ready to send machine back for service! OK, they said, I had to fill out the particulars on the sale, where purchased, when, etc., and they would send me another machine and there would be a credit hold until my return machine was received by Breville.
Well, long story short, they sent a remanufacture machine and I'm using the box to send my machine back. Job done! The new machine is quieter, responds more quickly, has a bit higher steam pressure and has really got me to really fall in love with espresso. Yup, after all these years, a shot of espresso has become my main drink.
I didn't expect this kind of service from Breville, actually I was quite stunned.......and after 27 months! No doubt, I'm a customer for life, and just know I'll will see the Oracle in my place, at some point in the future. Just right now, I'm really enjoying my new machine even though I'm using coffee beans at an alarming rate.

BES900 infusion fail - just pump noise
Our BDB is around 2 years old and has made lovely coffees and been trouble-free with religious cleaning etc. over this time - until this morning - it went through the pre-infusion cycle normally but then failed to put any water into the group head during the infusion phase. It makes a normal pumping noise but no water is forthcoming. I checked the water level, fine, and just in case I changed the water filter again, then tried holding the 1-cup button in to force infusion but again just pump noise with no water. Nor did it produce water when I attempted a cleaning cycle.
Can anybody suggest what's wrong with this machine and whether it's fixable or whether it needs go to a Breville service agent and cost me money I shouldn't have to spend? I am quite competent with repairs of electromechanical devices when I have enough data to work with but I don't have any info on how this thing works, so reluctant to rip into it in case it's more than just a sticky valve or such.

Hello IVcaffiened,
This could be a perished O ring. I had that happen to my machine at one year old. It made pumping noises with little flow which slowly built up to full pressure. Not suitable for coffee brewing.
I took it to Breville factory seconds outlet at Ultimo, Sydney, where Len the mechanic said he knew what was the problem and had some parts. He had it fixed within one day under warranty.
How far it is off the two year warranty for your machine? And where do you live?
Perhaps you could phone Breville to see how they can help.

Thanks Barry, I am in South Gippsland, nearest service centre for Breville stuff would be about 35km away in Morwell I think. I'll try calling Breville, from memory it was a little over 2 years, so if they won't help under the notion of extended warranty then I'd be inclined to dig into it myself if I can find out which o-ring?

Took the machine in to local Breville service agent and described the problem - then got a call back later in the day saying it worked perfectly when they turned it on - then proceeded to tell me the problem was operator error. I explained that I'm very familiar with the correct operation of the machine having used it daily for over 2 years. I was then told he reset the machine to default settings and perhaps there was a blockage that was dislodged by moving the machine from my home to the service agent. Seems he'll report to Breville that it was operator error so we'll see if Breville cough up or if I have to pay the service fee. I don't really care as it was basically just a quick test and reset plus a phone call so it won't cost me much. Strange it worked perfectly first time for the service guy when I couldn't get a single drop of water out of it during the infusion phase but it would run the pre-infusion phase normally. Anyhow, looking forward to getting it back because I hate paying for takeaway coffee!

Sooooo… I guess percussive maintenance is another way the service agents get the job done, no? Reminds me of the old day when the Sun engineers had a rubber mallet to whack the living daylights out of a well known series of fibre-channel drives!Originally posted by IVcaffiend View Post(…) I was then told he reset the machine to default settings and perhaps there was a blockage that was dislodged by moving the machine from my home to the service agent. Fonz would be proud! Ayyy!!

Percussive maintenance. That reminds me of when my father impressed a friend when he got the starter on his car going by hitting it with a hammer to free a stuck solenoid.
My father said it was just a simple wack with a hammer. The friend said that the skill was to know how hard to hit it.

I haven't had the hot water knob seize, and from all the reading I've done I haven't seen that mentioned before, sorry. I don't use mine for much other than occasional flushes. Most pre-heating I do with water from the group head because you can't run too much water through the group head! Those bits of ground espresso get all up-in-there.
How's your water? I suspect hard water scale build up on everything first just because of what my espresso repair tech has to deal with in our area. I would think you could see white scale build up on the hot water spout if that was the issue, I know I can see it on mine. It's a little late for you if that is scale but you can change the Breville filters more often than every 60 days if yo have hard water. I have a reminder set for 45 days.
I would think if it was a mechanical break of some kind that the knob would spin without anything happening.
Has anyone seen any de-scale guide for the BES900 owner yet?
Good luck!

Thanks for the suggestions.
I use the hot water tap for long blacks, otherwise same as you I always heat and flush through the group head.
Also this machine is a fairly recent replacement of my original (only 4 months old) and I change the filter often so scale shouldn't be an issue
I tried again this morning and managed to free it. What ever it is must have loosened over time.

Aaand mine has also very low flow out of the grouphead. Hot water tap works fine, but only a few drips out of the head. Funnily it will still build up pressure with the blind (takes about 20 secs though), and I can still get a reasonable cup out of it. Time to call up Breville!
Judging by the posts that have cropped up over the past month or so, the o-rings seem to last around 2 years with average use.

Gnat,
Looks like a bung O ring. Mine failed at one y o and behaved just like yours.
Where do you live? And which side of two y o is it?
Mine was fixed within one day, under warranty, at Breville Factory Seconds shop on Wattle Street Ultimo Sydney.
Anywhere outside Sydney may take longer if they have to import spares.
