  • Hi everyone! Hoping I can pull some info from the large knowledge pool on this great site! I have a BDB that is about 4 years old now and it won't heat past 68 degrees C, it just gets there and drops to 67 and then heats back up to 68. Any ideas or anyone experience a similar problem?

    Thanks!

    • Possibly the thermistor is shot.

Thanks for the reply Barry! Any idea how to test it? I'm in the process of taking it apart trying to get an idea how it works. The group head boiler is hot and producing 60ish degree water but the steam boiler is completely cold.

Probably best to wait for one of the more 'techy' guys to reply. Doesn't sound great unfortunately. Noidle know how these things work.

          • Thanks mate, hopefully I can get some more info. I'm pretty handy so I'm hoping I can get it fixed, only just replaced the solenoid a few months ago.

            • My take on it is "it's dead - so you can't make it any deader" if you have a look at the thermistors...

Have a look if the case of the thermistor is rusted, corroded or has holes in it. That's what happened to mine when it was caught in the "cold loop" or "temperature varying wildly - loop". Frankly - for the price of the thermistor, you might as well go ahead and replace them straight up - if you're dubious about them.

Yes - I know they're supposed to be encased in stainless-steel (I think) - but tell that to the dead thermistor I had replaced because of a rusted point which opened a hole to the inside...

              • Thanks inorog for the reply. I will pull the thermistors out tonight and have a look at them, any idea where to source some new ones? Looks like needapart in NZ doesn't have them. It's well out of warranty so I doubt there is any point trying to contact breville.

                • You have to wonder if they're the same thermistors across the 920 series as well... Wouldn't be surprised, but then stranger things have happened.

I can't tell you who else has them - since mine got replaced under warranty some years ago.

PM Noidle - he might know what and who.

No experience myself but I've read a thread where someone said they had to replace a faulty temp probe I think.

                    • Anyone had the experience where their BES900 runs water out of the group head on startup. A couple cups of water...
I've just got this second hand unit with only 134 (1340) shots on the shot-clock, made a few good coffees from it, but it's doing this strange water pumping on startup...

                      • Hi,

                        I'm a newbie.

I just bought (what I thought was a BES920) but the model on the bottom says BES900 /B from David Jones at Malvern. It was the shelf model but brand new and did not come in a box . I literally carried the machine out fo the store.

Q: What's the difference between the BES900 and the BES920?

Also, I did not get any baskets, Allen Key, Cleaning Disc etc.

Q: Are the baskets for the BES920 the same as the baskets for the BES900, and where is the best place to get them?

                        TIA

Hopefully you got it for a real steal.

As far as I know the 920 has a port bottom right that allows you to self descale. That's it.

Baskets and group handles can be bought from breville, but you may get lucky with someone on here

                          Good luck

Actually there's quite a bit more... I've cut and paste info from a website I found with a quick google search, espressoplanet dot com

NEW Descale features. Includes water hardness test strip, descale alert and LCD assisted descale procedures.
NEW Adjustable Steam Boiler Temperature from 265-285F to control steam pressure. Even more control for your Latte Art.
NEW Volumetric or Duration Shot Control. Preset, manual over-ride and reprogrammable. This is great for dialing in your extraction time.
NEW accessory: the RAZOR Dose trimming tool. Patented 58mm twist blade trims down the puck to the right level for precision doring and a consistent extraction.
NEW 2 year limited product warranty.

                                REALLY?
I'd be surprised if the BES900 was even for sale these days since the 920 came out a few years ago, let alone have a price tag that high.
Back when they first came out I saw the 900 selling in Harvey Norman for $1500, and that included the Smart Grinder.
