So I picked up one of these second hand at what I thought was a cheap enough price. It was advertised as having a leak which I suspected was just the steam wand ball valve.
Once I got it home and opened up I got a bit of a shock. I don't think it's the steam valve itself, just the top o-ring. But also the boilers middle probe o-ring. Looks like it's been leaking for quite some time and a lot of the internals have rusted. I'm told it works apart from the leak.
Does anyone know if the rust going to be an issue? It's mostly around the steam boiler, ie the bracket and even the electrical connectors. :-(
As long as there isn’t scale damage obstructing small passages around the group and solenoid pad, you might be alright replacing the o-rings. The water tubes use size #007 and the sensors use #010. The boilers themselves are stainless steel though the brackets as you know are not. The steam ball valve if it isn’t already, will drip. But it’s a pretty easy fix if you don’t want to buy a new one or can’t find one. Turns out it can be serviced and re used, rather than disposed of. My -920 has an ancient steam valve from an old -900, that I serviced about a year ago. It remains leak free a year after service. Though it will leak again and I will service it again.
The water tubes use size #007 and the sensors use #010.
Oh neat, thanks, I did find a link that mentioned the #007 o-rings but wasn't sure about the larger ones. Looks like the only option is to order from the US.
As for the rest of the machine I'm thinking the only other issue with the rust is on the connectors (one literally crumbled apart). I'll have a go cleaning these up and maybe soldering the connections back, hopefully with new spade connectors if I can find some.
I'll take a peek into the boilers to see if there's much scale build up in there. I'm expecting a lot since it seems to be a pretty old machine.
The o-ring sizes should translate in some way. They might even be agnostic of English or metric units. I would be shocked if you couldn’t get the same thing here in Oz (I’m here right now visiting old school mates).
Also, going forward you can use scale free water. 50-100mg of bicarb of potassium or bicarb of soda, per liter, added to pure water from the market... deionised or distilled. This will give a safe Ph, conductivity for sensor operation, and no possibility of scale.
This is what my old -900 solenoid looked like at nearly six years with using scale-free water:
I have a 5 years old BES900. Since last month the pressure is only reaching 3, and it takes ages (30sec plus before it even picks up pressure at all).
Did the solenoid test with blind basket and it can reach 11.5 before turn off and water flushed (no trickling water beforehand).
I have opened and replace with new pump, there was a leak on the pump area (pump housing was rusted).
However it doesn't solve the pressure issue at all. It still is super weak pressure.
I also tried adjusting the pressure on the OPV, but also no effect.
Before re-assembling I kept an eye on the OPV unit to ensure that there are no further leakage.
After 2-3 shots I also experienced flashing 93 on the LED as well.
What else could be the issue? Do I need to replace the OPV? Solenoid? Rubber gasket/group head ring (not leaking).
Update. Found the culprit. Gasket number 2 on the solenoid valve is completely melted and blocked.
Good on you. I was going to suggest that when the symptoms you report happen, it's often some kind of blockage in the group/solenoid pad complex. I have blamed these blockages before on scale OR corrosion damage from too high chlorides in your water.
Here is what my old -900 looked like from more than five years of water with no Ca and Mg (the components of scale), and no chlorides (which cause corrosion):
Considering the amount of rust damage, I am giving up on this thing.
Worth anything to anyone for parts? Seems easy enough to tear down for parts.
Not hard to tell which parts are stainless, eh?. I'd take the clips and tubes. But not worth shipping to USA. Just left Oz though. If MLB or Cairns, could have hooked up. Oh well.
The steam ball valve is rebuildable, in case someone near you has a leaker.
