You really couldnt do much worse!
    +1

Last Saturday I did coffees at my mates 40th. I brought my equipment but unfortunately they insisted on supplying the beans. They got the 1kg special from the supermarket.

I wound my commercial grinder down as fine as it would go but still couldnt get a decent pour.

      Hi all,
Im new here so would like to say hi to everyone.

Also with my BDB which I have had since Monday this week whenever I turn it on the temp guage in the LCD display continues rising above the 93 deg C mark right upto 107 deg C. To get the temp down I have to purge a lot of water through the hot water nozzle.

Whilst the temp is above 93 deg C the machine will not allow me to either pour a shot or purge through the group head.

This also occurs if the machine goes into standby when not used for over an hour.

Has anyone else experienced this, is it normal or have I just lucked out on a dodgy machine?

      Thanks for any help.
      Regards
      Derrin

Hello Derrin and welcome to CS.

What you are experiencing is certainly not normal.

You can try resetting the machine (instructions are on pg. 18 of your user manual). If that fails youll need to contact Breville or your retailer.

        Good luck with it!

          Thanks Dennis,

How annoying, a $1500 machine which is faulty out of the box.

I guess Ill get to see what Brevilles Customer Service is like early on.

          Cheers

            Hi all,

I bought my 900 with smart grinder about a month ago and couldnt be happier with both. That said, the other night while using the steam wand the back of my hand touched the shell or outside of the machine and I felt a small electrical shock.

It was so small that come the next day  I had forgotten until this morning when filling the hopper on the smart grinder (which was off)  I again touched the side of 900 which was also off.

I immediately again felt the shock. Has anybody else felt this? the wife thought I was crazy until she felt the jolt herself!

Ill ring the Customer line on Monday, but thought Id throw this out here to see if anybody else experienced a similar issue.

            Cheers.

Hello Sharpy and welcome to CS.

If you ever get a shock, no matter how small, from this or anything else that is connected to a powerpoint, it is dangerous.

Either the unit is not earthed properly or the powerpoint itself isnt earthed properly. And by the way, testing the powerpoint by plugging in an alternative appliance is not the way I would recommend checking the powerpoint.

This really needs to be assessed by a suitably qualified person.

Good chance thats your problem Des. They are at least 14 months old. They were stale at least 13 months ago.

Dayam!! Oh well I guess its off to the local bean shop to see whats on offer.

Actually managed a decent length extraction this morning, but it was the only one of 4. Strangely enough, my old Saeco Magic managed a reasonable go at those beans, but Ive tinkered with the grinder somewhat. And it complains a lot.

                Thanks,

You may have had a pressurised basket in the Saeco, which can mask the poor bean quality (visually, at least).

are you sure you have it set to degrees C not F ?

                      Doubtful... as 107 F would only be 42 C

More practise and the pressure runs at 11.5 bar during an extraction. I guess Ill have to track down a service agent to get it adjusted. Pretty disappointing that the touted feature is not right out of the box. Maybe I should have waited for version 2.0

                          Hello Des,

That probably indicates a circa 10 bar extraction. Our demo was more like 13.5 bar before I set it and the coffee was terrific. It now reads 10.5 bar and I am confident that there has been no major change in shot quality.

Hows your coffee when you cover the gauge?  :-?

                          Cheers

                          Chris

                            Hi,
Yes definitely set to Deg C not F. Have even tried swapping it over and back again.
Have also done the factory reset a couple of times.
Once I get the temp back down to 93 Deg C it stays there quite happily. It is just annoying as having to purge a lot of water from the hot water nozzle is noisy and disturbs the wife who is still in bed.
I have turned off the auto shut off for now so it can stay at the 93 C mark during the day.
Ill advise what the service centre finds.
                            Cheers Derrin

My simple method for removing the plasticy-"toolazytopreheatmyportafilter"-thingy:

I used a corkscrew...  It worked, and didnt scratch anything.
When removing the plastic insert, I strongly recommend that new owners avoid unscrewing the spouts on the portafilter (as has been recommended). Like emmanuel (in this thread), I did so and then the spouts did align correctly. Removing the plastic bit without removal of the spouts avoids that problem. How would you like it if your portafilter spouts we not Left-Right, but Front-Back (as are mine)?

Naturally, "a naked portafilter would solve this problem" (LOL) and provide far better feedback on exxtraction. Yeah, sorry guys, Im in that camp as well.

Reading your response confused me somewhat.

The post from emslibbles suggests to me to use an actual corkscrew into the plastic thing to pull it out. Not to unscrew the spouts.

Your response suggests you did this and all is well:
I did so and then the spouts did align correctly.
Then you go on to say your spouts are not aligned correctly.

Always proofread your responses so you dont words out.

                                Brett.
