I received this comment on the Youtube video I posted a few pages back outlining my > 9-bar extractions (now corrected).

"Thx for the vid. Ive never seen my BES900 pump higher than 10bar of pressure yet I see yours pumping up to 12. Have you modified your machine in any way?"

    I had to laugh

Nick, if youd bothered to read any of this thread or the secific thread dedicated to the OPV, then youd know thats it only affected early AUS & US production & the ongoing production was re-calibrated months ago.

      Hi Phil,

Yes, thanks for your reply and I think you still didnt address my question. Since my BES900XL was shipped from AUS to US in early of Nov., I thought the unit should had been calibrated with the blind filter to 9 ~ 10 bar. But the reality is its OPV was set to 12 bar and was just same as those early USA and AUS shipped units.
My unit seems to be made in the week 35 this year, is it still an early USA version?
Honestly, this is not a big deal for an experienced user to adjust the OPV by himself but in terms of QA control from Breville and the first impression of any novice users, the persistent OPV issue is not a good thing to Breville.
Anyway, thanks for your supports,I just want to express customers needs and expectations are always an enterprices first priority.

      Regards,

Yes this is still an early version. The units were shipped direct from China to the US, not from AUS.

        Cheers, Phil

Phil, if made in week 39, is it well calibrated?

            Thanks.

Anyone have direct experience of taking their BES900 to a service centre in Sydney to have the OPV adjusted? I have rung a few and they all want me to drop it off and tell me it will be a week or two depending on other jobs. It still makes great coffee so I hardly want to be without it for that long, Ill get withdrawals. But I just have that niggle that I want it to be just right, 9 bar not 11.5. Might even become an issue if I ever decide to off load it.

Perhaps I should have been more patient and bought when I knew the newer versions were out, but I wanted to support a site sponser (thanks Dennis from cuppacoffee and I have sent you an email, need a copy of my reciept, lost in computer crash).

                Hi Miloolimm,

The taste determines if you would like to adjust the OPV. You can leave it as it is and then send it to service center after the pick time of adjusting earlier version BDBs OPV.

Have a question about the cup warmer... Is there a way to turn off the heating element in the top panel?? I understand that most people like this feature in an espresso machine, but I dont - never have really. Never the less, in this case my BDB just barely fits under my top cabinet in the kitchen. And frankly there is no other location I can use. So, the heat generated by the cup warmer is simply heating the underside of my cabinet. Not good in general, and really not good since Id prefer to store my beans in that cabinet.

I understand there will be some heat generated by the boilers that would heat the top plate anyway. That I could deal with, but for the heat generated and the energy wasted, Id most like to turn off the active heating element in the top.

                  Doable?

                  Phil?

                    Hi Rod,

The cup warmer is heated by convection from the boilers. There is no element to turn off

                      Hi Rusty,
I do realize VERY few machines have heating elements specifically for the top, but the BDB does. Its located towards the back of the top plate, mated to the underside of the aluminum plate. It is pretty ingenious I guess, but in my case its a bit of a problem. I was just hoping to be able to turn it off.

Well there you go... I learn something new every day but forget it the following day :

                        Thanks Rod.

Well, I guess I got my answer, just took the machine out ... tried to pull a shot that choked the machine and it went straight to 13 bars. Those machines just arrived in Canada and the OPV is still not calibrated properly and we are in December??? Not impressed, unless I am missing something?

Sorry, but its not an element. Its a bunch of electronics. There is no cup tray element, its heat is purely from convection, generated by the boilers.

                                Canada and the OPV
Sorry but I really dont have a record of when the Canadian production was run. The max you should see with a choke is ~10.5 so when a shot is running at a reasonable extraction rate, then itll sit around ~9-9.5bar. Get in touch with our Canadian customer service & they will help you out. As a company rep I could never suggest a DIY, but it seems others are/have done it with little problems. Let me know if I can help further.

                                Cheers, Phil
