  • Re: Breville BES900 Dual Boiler - Owners thread

I have usually found that the reason for uneven flow is inconsistent distribution of the dose. This tends to be hidden by spouts, but is obvious when a naked portafilter is used...

    Bring on the naked

Would you then be able to say that  a) + b) = BDB is better than a GS3 (at least in the most important factor - being the espresso)?
      Nope. Sorry I wouldnt.

The Breville is a very good machine, but its not a GS/3. I have seen another bloke (who doesnt have either :) write that he thinks its better as well. In the real world, I disagree.
Can Phil say that the temp stability is better than the GS/3? As in, I know he can say it - but is it true? Seems like a big claim!

He does- and there is no reason not to believe him- however the performance of a machine is not judged by temperature stability alone. There are studies which promote flat line temperature for shot quality and just as many which suggest that some (consistent) variation in temperature contributes to a broader spectrum of flavour. I generally find flat line shots to be bland- but thats my palate.

For me, the GS/3 is a superior machine in so many ways. What its not though is 4 or 5x as good. The Breville represents astonishing value- especially now that retail price is often less than wholesale price. :

My GS/3 was never in danger of being displaced

Thats the first thing that came to my mind when Groover reported his issue. But in the context of Groovers issue its unlikely to be bad distribution if hes getting an uneven flow with an empty portafilter.

Note to self- More reading of thread content required...

It can also be dud spout anatomy. There are quite a few Silvia owners who have experienced this.

Groover, sorry I was going to do that this morning for you, completely forgot, if someone doesnt do it before hand, Ill do it when I get home and let you know.
              Thanks
Groover I got around to doing it for you and although there is a small difference, they come out fairly evenly on both sides (I have two shot glasses with measurements).

Do you have a level at home? If not, I know you can download a level app on the iPhone if you have one. It might be good to check how level a few things are:
                - Your bench... and if its level;
                - Your BDB on the level bench... and if its level
                - Your group / shower screen / PF when inserted into the group
That last one would be hard to check, but the only thing I can think that could cause that with an empty PF is how level this stuff is.
You could also try putting some paper etc under the left hand legs to prop it up a bit and see if that makes a difference.
Thanks for the reply , the machine is level I used my trusty Stabila level to make sure.
Its my coffee poltergeist , he is back to spook me again.
I guess its off to the service center again.
Its a great machine and Ill just have to be patient to get it right.
                Cheers Angelo

Once again thanks for your time, looks like there is something wrong with mine. Anyone know where I can get a cheap exorcist from ?
                  Cheers Angelo

Do other spouts fit the BDB portafilter? Are spouts a standardised thing or are they brand specific? ie would I have to get one from Breville? When will the naked PF be available, anyone know?

Actually its not a claim its reality. Heres what Mark Prince said recently:

"Bottom line - this Breville Dual Boiler is really stable - actually a bit more stable than the GS/3 tests I ran some time ago. I blame this success on the Brevilles PID controlled grouphead thermostat"

Heres a link to his most recent comments in full

Other brands may fit, but ours is not an industry standard thread like say a LM, Synesso, etc

Give you all an update on the Naked PF today

Especially given I think Phil said previously that it would be early in the new year.

I think the main holdup is that communication between Breville and the factory in China keeps getting marked as spam, owing to a certain word in the product name.
