Its called a "graeme" around here.
The name was actually suggested by the user called DIG.
You can read the whole story in the original post here:

I believe at least one Ikon owner calls theirs Neil.
only 16 pages into reading this monstrosity of a thread here... so apologies in advance if this has already been discussed:
up to that point, it appears as if BrevilleUSA is handling the OPV adjustment by sending out a new one, (with the expectation that you will send in your out of adjustment one, they pay shipping). this is in contrast to what ive been reading they are doing in the aussie (home) market, where they are instead referring hapless owners to (sometimes dodgy) repair facilities.
i am curious as to why the difference in the way the issue is handled, from one country versus the other?

Persumably because there is less in the way of health insurance and to stop law suits when people take it upon themselves to act as electricians and machine techs? :-? ;D
hmmm... i understand that line of reasoning, but i dont see how it applies in this case because either way, the owner is not the one encouraged to do the adjustment.
Dont know if anyone else has had this problem. It seems like an OPV problem but not one that is too high like everyone elses.
When I pull a shot after the preinfusion stage the pressure goes up until it hits around 11 then it swings wildly (by about 1.5 bar) back and forth betwwen 8 and 11 for about 5 seconds, then it settles around 9 but bounces back and forth around by about half a bar continously until I stop the extraction. I can hear the pump kinda stop/starting its pressure as its doing this-almost like theres a pipe that might be clogged or something and the pump is trying to pump water in spurts.
I think my grinding and tamping are ok because I get about 2 shots worth of espresso in my cup in about 35-40 seconds (thats including the extraction period of about 7 seconds).
Hope someone might have some ideas as to whats wrong. I havent opened up or adjusted the OPV but maybe I should?
Whatever you do DO NOT open it up and have a look, this sounds like something completely different that needs to be assessed by a service centre or Breville themselves.
Phil should be around, in the meantime go up this page, he will have a comment with his contact details on it.

Hi pkim4,
I guess your BDBs OPV was set at 11 bar and the jumpy needle may be caused by the oscillation of the brew boilers pump. The OPV just sits above the pump because it is insserted between the brew boiler and brew boiler pump.
I found the oscillation or vibration while the pump is operating can be propagated from the thin sock absorbant rubber to the OPV. When I adjusted my BDBs OPV =, I found teh way I held the OPV did affect the OPV readings and sometimes it was very jumpy. At last, I twist the OPV and tried to reduce the vibrations and then determined its best position.

Try pulling a shot using a blind filter and/or dual wall filter (empty) whilst checking the gauge. The gauge reading should be stable, i.e. not swinging around wildly. My pump generally produces a consistent noise but I dont really pay much attention to it as Im usually really focused on the results of my pour.

Finally some decent advice.
Where are you located, so I can recommend a service Centre to do the OPV adjustment if required.

Well... I give up. I cannot pull a decent shot with the BDB.
This thing is the most expensive paperweight Ive ever bought.
I want my EM6910 back!
sooo, this was 10 days ago... so far, poor old blue has had gushers that start dropping during preinfusion, and chokers, as seen in the video he posted more recently, right?
just trying to get my facts straight here: the only thing blue changed between the gusher and the choker is grind. right?
somehow, im convinced the solution has to lie in a grind in between the one that caused the gusher and the one that caused the choker.
blue, if the difference in your grinds from the gusher to the choker was only one click on your smart grinder, then it kind of sounds like the smart grinder has the same issue as the rancillio rocky... too much burr movement between adjacent clicks. i must say, in the little bit of reading ive done in the SG thread, i dont recall reading that complaint about it.
in any event blue, if you are dosing out 18-19g, and have certainty of that because you used scales, and you are tamping pretty close to 15kg, (30lbs to us yanks), which you are doing with your calibrated tamper, then the last variable HAS to be grind. you must find a way to find a grind size somewhere between that which gushed and that which choked. there IS a way, mate.
Hi all i live in north Queensland and have just ordered the BES900 and smart grinder yesterday. I am upgrading from nespresso. Will not get it till the new year and have read all this thread and got some good advice. I am new to this type of machine and am looking forward to learn about good espresso .Not sure where i will get my fresh coffee from yet .I would appreciate any advice when i get my BDB as i am new to this.I will post again when i get my machine and see now i go with it . Great thread
