    Thats correct, howser.

Another way to put it; your two RH photos, 073629 and 073754, have everything the right way up.

Yes, thats generally a good way to take things apart and put them back together again, provided you dont take it apart while its hot the first time, burn your fingers, drop the bits, then have to work out which way they go back.

Is it ok to keep the portafilter engaged in the grouphead while not in use? Just curious about how this affects the seal...

This actually is a good thing if it is in loosely as it keeps the seal moist while cooling down, preventing the seal drying out.

                Gloria Jeans I go to.
My wife and I go to GJ every saturday morning - but I refuse to buy coffee there any more - sick of the burnt taste.

Well had my BES900 for a week now. Got the grinder all sorted out and have now made some amazing coffees. I previously had a fully automatic Saeco but the Breville is fantastic. Really great dark looking espresso and the steaming works brilliantly with a little practice.

Couple of questions from reading this thread though...

                1. What is a VST basket and why would I use one?
                2. Naked Portsfilter - again what is it and why would I use one?

Thanks for all the great info guys. Love this machine.

I f you are happy with the amazing coffee then stay with it

You could get caught up in chasing a better coffee that may never materialise

Yep - really useful to learn what to do and what to look for. Scotties were good too.

informally... how many of you BDB owners have removed the plastic disc that pressurizes the portafilter?
I removed mine today. I think its got to be more hygenic.

1: the VST baskets have more precise, even holes. Although the stock breville one looks pretty good compared to a synesso, I saw a pic Phil posted previously.

2: Naked PF has the lower section removed (where the spouts normally are), so you can see the bottom of the basket, and view the extraction. This is great for diagnosing incorrect techniques (you can easily see uneven extraction) and it also looks cool!! I also find it great for keeping things clean, as the PF doesnt need to be cleaned, only a quick wipe of the basket required.

                        Cheers

When the steamer is turned on, do you have steam visibly coming out of the 3 holes evenly? No matter how the tip is turned on mine, the hole closest to me, never has visible steam like the back two. Can someone try on theirs and see if this is normal?

They all look like this. Its an illusion & steam is actually coming out of all 3 holes equally. Many commercial machines look like this as well. Is there something wrong with the quality of your microfoam?

                            Cheers, Phil

                              Phil,

Im having some trouble getting good microfoam, yes. Most likely my technique, but did notice this and thought it might have something to do with it...

                              Thoughts?

                                Hi

Has anyone had any issues with shot volume?

After measuring both 1 & 2 cup volumes (post extraction) I am getting approx 60ml from the 1 cup and approx 120ml from the 2 cup - using the double basket in each. I know I should be getting 30ml & 60ml respectively.

I have reset to factory default, but still the same volumes.

Can anyone please tell me if I am missing something??
