  • Breville 900 OPV and gauge

Having had several discussions with Breville regarding the higher than expected gauge readings on some of the 900 series of machines, I have some further information from Breville.

    1. The initial run of 900s were all calibrated using a scace device to 9 bar whilst in production, plus or minus .5 bar. In the real world, some machines that were calibrated this way gave high readings eg. 12 bar.

    2. Machines that are now being manufactured for here and the overseas market, are being calibrated during production with a block filter instead of the scace. They will read either on or close to 9 bar in the real world.

    3. If you own a machine that read high, then:
    a) It will not harm the machine
    b) It can be adjusted to 9 bar and is approximately a 5 minute job. No parts are replaced during the process.
    c) Breville are ensuring at least one major service centre in each city is capable of performing the work. This is already in place in Sydney and Brisbane with others to follow soon.

Please call Breville if you have a machine that has a high reading and you would like to arrange to have the adjustment made.

And please accept my sincere apologies if I misled owners or potential buyers in any way. FWIW, the machine I have at home reads high, yet makes great coffee.

    Cheers
    Den

My machine reads high, usually around 12-13.

Does this mean that its likely extracting at 12-13, or is it just that the gauge reads high?

If its the latter then I dont really care.

Its probably extracting at a higher pressure Toasty.

          2 questions.

I assume its the first shipment regardless of who sold it?

Mine has been making awesome coffee but the only thing I think it lacks is that my espresso is a bit thin and lacks a tiny bit of body. The last little bit in the espresso cup freely moves around the cup like water where as a properly pulled shot in a high quality cafe will roll around the cup like syrup... cant really explain it better than that.

If I get mine adjusted I wonder how this will change, the crema is great but I just feel its a bit thin at times but the taste is still great.

I can vouch for the adjustment only taking 5 minutes but making a huge difference to my experience with the BES900. Mine was going off scale 13 Bar + with a blind filter and I struggled to get any real consistency from the machine. After a quick adjustment by Phil it has been a pleasure to use and is consistently making great coffee.

I cant speak highly enough of Brevilles service and support of this machine.

Yes, first shipment regardless of who sold it.

And yes, all things being equal, I expect you will find more body in the cup from the machine once adjusted.

                Accepted,

glad to see that every one can now get this sorted, as mine is much better since Phil adjusted it.

Why/how did the Scace get it wrong?

Should this be crossed posted on both the owners thread and the OPV thread that was created? and why is this in the "General Coffe Related..." this should be in "Brewing Equipment - Midrange ($500-$1500)" so owners can run in to it.

Just for the record, I have access to a calibrated pressure gauge through work and by comparison the gauge on my BES900 was pretty much spot on.

I dont fully understand how it came about.

I posted it in a new thread because I didnt want it to get swamped and lost in the owners thread. I guess a Mod will move it if its in the wrong section.

                      Hi

Why/how did the Scace get it wrong?

Not sure if this might be part of the problem, but the scace is set up to deliver 76mls in 30 seconds (according to greg scace).
If you want to deliver your shot at 60mls in 30 secs and the machine is calibrated at 9 bar using a scace delivery rate then logically you need to slow the flow rate (finer grind) resulting in higher pressure reading ... 12 bar perhaps? :-?

Anyone else want to have a stab at it?

                      Cheers B

Im glad the issue is finally being acknowledged and not just ignored and/or minimized.

Do I get great coffee out of my 12 bar extraction? yes.

Do I want the extraction to be at 9 bar? yes.

I guess Ill call Breville first thing tomorrow!

                        Thanks for posting cuppacoffee!

                        Cheers,
                        Bach

                          Hmm, interesting development RE: pressure.

thats why my coffee sucks! J/K - its been pretty good. Now, do I bother sending it back to get fixed? Any idea on how long this will take?

Oh well, I just phoned Breville and they told me im over-tamping (or "over tampering" as the guy called it). I asked if there was a resolution to the issue, and he said that I needed to tamp less.

                            Very disappointed in this response.

Either theyre adjusting the machines with OPV issues, or theyre not. Apparently theyre not.

I just gave them a call, and they took my number and said they will pass it on to a coffee specialist, who will hopefully return my call today!
