I dont know why Breville wants to return my money and get back my machine so your assumption is not reasonable.
Its hypothetical. Forget reason, lets just say that they offered it for no reason at all, no business logic, no financial figures to consider, nothing, just an offer.

Another way to put it is this: if you knew all you know now about the 900, but hadnt bought one yet, would you buy one now or not? Lets say the 900 in your house belonged to a flatmate who was moving out and taking it with him and you had the money to buy one - would you?

Did you see in the picture the BES840 consumes 1700W ? How would that be so high? It appears to me that has to be so to increase the agilibility of PID thermal control to maintain the brewing temp. not going down too much during the extraction.
Youre partially right, in that it does allow more flexability with temp control & PID, but it also allows a faster transition from espresso to steam & the ability to texture more effectively larger volumes of milk.

        Cheers, Phil

So, Phil, Just the one question from me.

Is there any way to change the temp/preinfusion time/preinfusion pressure with this new bit of kit (like the BES900) or is it set at the factory?

Having the ability to adjust on the fly would be a delightful thing, Even for a consumer level machine (BES900 is prosumer in my opinion)

You cant adjust temp, its set at the factory, but the PI duration will be able to be controlled albeit it in a manual sort of a way. Press & hold either the 1 cup or 2 cup buttons & PI will run for as long as the button is held, when released, full pump pressure is applied.

Id be interested to know why the decision was made to go thermocoil and not single boiler? From my laymans perspective it would seem much more difficult to get good results from a thermocoil than from a boiler, even with a pid.

Bazza, dont you think it may just have been price? Different machines for different market segments?

These projects take at least 2 years from inception to market, even if you have the technical package somewhat resolved, which we did, as the BES860 uses similar but not the same package. But we didnt just strip the grinder from the 860, we added features from the BES900 to improve the users coffee expereince, like low pressure pre-infusion & dedicated hot water. Oh and one of the aims of this project was replacing a machine in the current line-up, which was a thermostat controlled thermo-block.

                  Cheers, Phil

So, when can we expect this to be in the shops?

Also seatle coffee gear put on a new video showing the thermocoil, appearently sent to them by breville.

The Breville web site says the BES840 has both a Thermoblock and a Thermocoil. Is this true?

It actually only has a Thermo-coil. The way the info on the site is worded I can see how its confusing.....

for the difference between the Breville boilers, thermoblocks and thermocoils.

aha, jump to 3:50 to see the difference between the thermoblock and thermocoil Looks much better, but harder to heat which is probably one reason for the higher rated element.

How does the 840 control pre-infusion? Does it pulse the pump like earlier models or control it softly like the 900?
