The Elephant in the room that nobody wants to mention is  "market pricing" which every retailer does to some extent.
Wow. Puns make my head hurt. I havent heard that one from anyone but a marketing major. In essence as a consumer you are 100% spot on. Why can I buy product X at place Y for half the price you offer.

Im curious, do you have anything to do with SCUBA diving, or anything else where price disparity in Australia is common? Since you make the same crappy argument as everyone who only sees their issue with it.

Simple things. If youre primary concern is $$ spent, import. Simple. You save money in the short term.

I do still work in logistics. Import/export is a tricky business, and the supply chain model is not as simple as you try and point out.

Personally. Im just going to enjoy good coffee.

Not ignored,..just not the full story.
OK. Implicit in your statement above is that you know the full story (and it was also implicit in your early post where you talked about the real reasons). Which part of the full story is not being disclosed?
No, i dont know the "full story", but i do know that a few minor technical changes, freight variations, duty, GST, etc,...is not the full story.
I did say earlier that i suspected much of the discrepancy is the manufacturer/exporter "up charging for the Au market ( beyond any volume pricing factors)
The Elephant in the room that nobody wants to mention is "market pricing" which every retailer does to some extent.

but i just dont understand why retailers are not open about the real reasons for pricing differences...?
Pointless to do so. An earlier post informed you of the reasons. You chose to ignore them.

at the cost of best value. At the end of the day everyone wants a bargain. Its unfortunate when the "under dog" cant compete with the big sellers, but thats how we all want it. We live in a society that promotes and tries to achieve perfect competition.
Maybe, but all firms (potentially) sell more than just the physical product.. Smaller specialised retailers do compete in selected markets.....particularly where after-sales service / advice etc have considerable value. Not every good sold is a commodity. If youre buying a can of coke you dont need to think too hard about where you buy it.

Best value to me means best value for the whole package....the physical good and the service/advice that help you use it / fix it if something goes wrong. Consumers will differ in the weight they apply to these factors, and the extent to which the service side matters for different products. Im more than happy to buy a fridge at the large retailers, and have bought an auto coffee machine from one of them before...but wouldnt buy a medium-high end machine from them unless the price difference was totally ridiculous. Not because I hold any animosity towards them...simply because the value you get from some goods is more likely to depend on having someone with specialised skills at the other end of the deal.

    Cheers
    BOSW

i dont think you can go wrong with the BES900. To suggest the BES900 is only an appliance insinuating that its unfit for its purpose and inferior against other priced machines is false.

Breville are an appliance manufactering company so they build and sell appliances. Across the board they build appliances of different standards and quality and this is reflected in the price.
There experience in producing an array of appliances gives them an edge as they can bring experience and knowledge from other appliances into this device VS a company who only specalises in 1 device. As in materials to use etc etc.

I can appriciate peoples view that a specialised coffee manufactering company would have a greater appriciation for a coffee machine vs one that builds a vast array, but that being said i dont think its true to suggest the quality or output of the device is less in quality based on that assumption.

Take Toyota for example, would you say all Lexuss are worse in quality/comfort/performance vs a BMW or Mercedes based on the fact that same company builds Corollas, Yaris and Camrys, which when it comes to cars are very mass produced and have that generic feel.. Of course not a Lexus still has the quality and prestiege of its rivals.

The same applies here, just because Breville make other products, does not suggest there flagship espresso machine is of lesser quality.

I could be biased because i have a BES900, but the reason i bought the BES900 vs others listed is for that reason, i feel that for the price it was the best value and produced the best coffee for my budget.

If you argue that the BES900 doesnt make a good coffee because you dont like it, then thats fine thats a personal oppion, but to suggest its build quality is inferior or longevity is lesser than others purely based on other products a company builds then im sorry but thats no arguement at all.
I dont think that anyone is saying that the breville is a bad product or even inferior. What is being said is that we need to be careful not to exclude shopping in a place trying to provide something a little more exclusive just because they may not be the cheapest. Otherwise we wont have anything like the BMWs or even something better to compare our Toyotas against , as there wont be a shop that can afford to sell them.

PS my first decent machine was a Breville and its still going after 8 years or so. Also how does a shop that is lucky to sell 2 bes900s a week compete on buying power with a company that buys hundreds? Im all for, getting a good price but at what cost is the question?

Yes , i understood the llort crack , but have no idea what the resurrection of old thread was refering to...or the cans from Woolies ??
This thread is only a few days old , I was the second poster and i dont have the time luxury of background reading every topic or comment to ensure i am not repeating a discussion in other threads.
The smart thing for someone to have done would be to provide a link to the previous discussion, rather than assume we sit around waiting for opportunities to "llort" .

Obviously international pricing is a sensitive subject as it is with many products in Au, but i just dont understand why retailers are not open about the real reasons for pricing differences...?

sorry, but even Google "translate " was stumped by that mix of words  !

What is this "old thread" reference ?
Youll have to view the words LLORT in the mirror (just translating...dont shoot the messenger).  The reference to "old thread" as in ancient forum threads where topics were already discussed and resolved...that one I guess was a generalisation of overly zealous new comers to the forum who typically resurrect these "old thread" to flex their coffee knowledge which sometimes are a little under-researched...again I have not been following this thread but am just "translating"

i actually went on to say that i felt the major cost difference originated at Lelit
And I presume that "feeling" is based on first hand experience with Lelit no doubt? Visit Coles or Woolies and buy a can and then a whole slab. Add 15k km and then join the dots to achieve rudimentary grasp of topic of conversation.

We see this every few weeks. Newb "eggspurt" arrives  to dig up the carcass of an old thread whilst displaying fundamental lack of understanding and then disappears. Ultimately, its chest beating, finger pointing and a whole lot of hot air. When viewed in the mirror, only another llort ... :
