    Re: EM6910 help

    Hi all

I have only had one coffee today as i have been out and about plus feeling a little queazy but, I did put some of your suggestions into place with my coffee this morning.

I use the same set-up as you. I would agree that it looks under-dosed. I use two "1-dose"s on the smart grider with usually +2 bars on the fine dose adjust. Sometimes its +2 on the first dose and then +3 on the second. I do a settling tap between the first and second dose just to avoid spillage.
This was very helpful as a guide. I ended up using the timed one shot twice, with two and then three clicks on the fine adjustment setting. I did a tap in between shots, as suggested.

Also, I levelled off with a knife. Previously, I was trying to use my finger and it was resulting in uneven mounds. Using the knife ensured a much more even distribution of the grinds.

Second test is that there is no stuck puck after removing the PF post shot - that is where the puck stays stuck to the showerscreen due to underdosing or too greater head space post tamping.
I actually had a stuck puck both today and in the shots from yesterday. When I went to knock the puck out of the filter basket, this morning the majority came out quite easily, but the rest i had to dig out with a spoon.

Some things regarding this mornings coffee

    - it took a while to start the pour. Im not sure how long because I didnt time it, but im sure it was longer than it should have been
    - the coffee was week and somewhat bland but sour/bitter

I realised yesterdays shot tasted way better, because I hit the SINGLE shot button by mistake (which i didnt realise until this morning!). So maybe thats why the puck was funny yesterday?

I guess its all about finding the right way of doing things and sticking to them and then modifying until you get the right balance of everything?

Heres a pic of todays puck.

No, I am using the standard filter basket - double.
Just to be sure is that dual wall double filter, or single wall double filter?

Its still looking a bit "off" to me! The crema does look thin - what beans are you using and how old are they?

              Re: EM6910 help

I would try dosing a bit higher. There is barely any sign of shower-screen imprint on the puck and compared with my 6910, the coffee is still low in the basket. To answer your question - I think you are heading in the right direction. Dose is very important in getting good espresso and takes a bit of practise to get right. Once you get it pretty close, then you can tweak the grind.

Just to check, are you using fresh coffee?

              Pete

                Re: EM6910 help

Im using coffee from Di Bartoli coffee which was shipped around the 9th of May. Whats the cut off for coffee bean use? about four weeks?

And I am using the single wall double filter basket.

How could my cup affect the brew?

Ive been watching some youtube videos about proper tamping so I will work on that as well.
Off to fiddle with the dose now!

Roasted beans are generally considered to be OK for 2-3 weeks from roast date, various factors can impact on that though.

I suspect thats a jab at the fact that youre using a Gloria Jeans cup

                    Re: EM6910 help

Hahaha! that cup was bought because of the size and it is one of the only ones that fit under my espresso machine. At least its not a starbucks cup... :P

Question - the sunbeam grinder. Is this on par with the smart grinder? My friend has one and says it works so well with her machine (which is the same as mine).  Would it be considered a step down if i went from the smart grinder to this grinder? Or is this a silly thought that sunbeam works best with sunbeam? I just feel like i could go even finer but dont want to piss around with shims anymore...

but until then Ill just muddle along.

Muddleing along was the way I learnt how to make coffee.

I only took two goes to get the shims right on my Smart grinder. That was many months ago.

Some Sunbeam grinder owners here have had to add shims.

I once owned a Sunbeam grinder and found it inferior to my Breville.

With the Breville the delivery chute drops the grounds vertically from the burrs, while with the Sunbeam the chute is angled and can block and retain grounds requiring a thump. It also made a big mess of grounds on the bench.

Read the comments elseware at this site.

                      Barry.

Yeah, I reckon its the best way - advice on this forum will start to make more and more sense as you get further up the learning curve. Then you can look back and laugh at how you used to make coffee ;D - as someone said here recently.

I have had both the sunbeam and the breville smart grinder you have mentioned - they seem reasonably on par to me. The breville gets better reviews I think, and the dosing function is nice. It takes a little while to get into a coffee routine that works for you, and there are a LOT of factors to play with in the coffee game - but I think thats part of what keeps it fun.

Whats you pour time and volume looking like now Drover?

                          Re: EM6910 help

I looked at the sunbeam in the shops today and I think it would be so messy compared to the smart grinder! So I will just fiddle with the shims - do i just whack another one in until i find the right grind setting? There are two in there already.

I bought a short latte glass today so that i can see what my entire shot looks like.

Despite all my questions, I am enjoying the fine tuning and fiddling. With the Jura that i had before this, all you could really adjust was the grind (super auto) and well that wasnt all that exciting. Despite my sight issues, I am enjoying the learning experience. It will be nice to be able to say that i can do this, one day!

Okay I managed to add the shims into my grinder without any help from anyone While i was there, i noticed that the two that we put in the other day were the ONLY shims in the grinder. I was under the impression that there were supposed to be two that were pre-installed.... Anyway, i just threw in the other two that I had. Gave it a good vacuum out while I was there. Hopefully this will help too!

I was having a stab at the Gloria jeans cup! Cup wont make any difference or so they say!!

Id say under pressurized too. Its getting to much water in there and not building enough pressure. You want water to be forced through the coffee to pull out the delish oils, not create a wall of water that drips down or is artifically forced through with back pressure.

Sounds like u need a higher dose (more coffee in the basket). As others said. Fill the basket till its full, give it a tap on the bench so it drops in, give it a tamp if it looks like thered be a water space, add bit more.
heres the point to watch for. If you shoot the coffee and the machine chokes as in nothing or few drops or its very slow to pour, your coffee is over dosed and too fine and is blocking the holes in the basket or too tight for water to pass through.

Put less coffee in and keep the grind fineness the same. It should pour through then. You might waste a few coffees but try over dose to choke the machine, then work back.
