Great reading this post. And great purchase in the end. I've got my eye on something similar, but the Bezzera is out as I can't plumb into mains where I live (and no room for external tank either). I've seen the odd tanked BoEma around so that's a possibility, but there's a good chance I'll end up with a BES900. For any other noobs reading this there are many options not discussed here, a few of which can currently be found on the Bay for under AUS$1500. These include La Cimbali Junior (my favourite), Nuova Simonelli Musica, Promac, BoEma, and more. All with programmable dosing and commercial build.
Anyway, I mainly wanted to post to see if the OP had bought a grinder yet. I absolutely agree that the grinder is of extreme importance and if you can afford a Mazzer, Compak, Mahlkonig, Macap etc then there are plenty of good options going cheaper, especially 2nd hand. I've got a Nemox Lux and am very happy with it. I got it for <$150 2nd hand in good condition. Its more than capable of 3-4 coffees in a row, with the only real downside being stepped adjustment. So I'd look at Isomac, Breville, Rocky, Quick Mill etc. before splashing out on a $500+ grinder.

Im now the proud owner of a Bezzera BZ35! Thanks for the heads up!
Congratulations! As soon as I saw that machine I knew it was a great buy for someone, I only sold mine to upgrade to the ultimate machine - a commercial lever.

I sold mine to a friend and still enjoy having a coffee from it, you will get much pleasure and fantastic coffee out of it. The guys at Barazi are very helpful if you need any technical advice on it.

Now you just need a good grinder to match it, a Pharos hand grinder will give you Titan Conical quality coffee, but if you want electric something like the Compak K3 would be a reasonable match i reckon.

    Thanks All.

Im now the proud owner of a Bezzera BZ35! Thanks for the heads up!

Had a read through the refurb post mentioned above, went down to Sydney to see the beast today, and bought it. Everything inside looked pretty nice & shiny, but Ive dropped it off at my local shop for a service and a good look over just to be safe. Theyve given me the name of a local business that does the water filters for their shop machines, so Ill go and chat to them - if I dont get any sense out of them Ill speak to Bombora

I think Id have been perfectly happy with the BES900 - this BZ35 just happened to turn up at the right time at the right price.

I really appreciate all the discussion and advice.

role up my sleeves and get medievil on my plumbing (oo-er missus!).
call Bombora - they supplied me with all the right pieces to fit into my existing plumbing (based on my bad explanations) and I bought a 3-way (hot, cold, filtered) tap from Bunnings which nobody even knew was different to the existing mixer in the sink (until the other half saw me fitting it... but thanks to the mysterious leak the original one developed I got away with it!)

The local plumbing shop will probably have all the parts, but they (probably) wont have the know-how on filter requirements for espresso machines. ie. You need to reduce the scale above all else.

DJs have BES900 for $1199 in their Half Yearly Clearance, i got HN to match the price and also picked up a BCG800 grinder to go with it for $175 as well which seems to be the going rate.

As a newbie to Group Machines, im used to the Saeco Magic Comfort+ Automatic, it will take some time dialing in the grinder for coarse /\/ fine and dosage, but once you get it right and depending on the beans youll love it.

Lastly and i forgot until i left HN to get yourself a bang bang to empty your grinds from the group handle... I bought the Sunbeam one as it has a heavier rubber on the top and bottom of the metal basket and internal basket, where as the breville on just has a small rubber ring on it, it doesnt like like it will do much protecting my granet benchtop was as the Sunbeam Bang Bang had a more heavier rubber base.

    Gotcha.

So. I go to view a certain Bezzera tomorrow morning hopefully. If I go for it, I would have to:

role up my sleeves and get medievil on my plumbing (oo-er missus!).
amble down to the local plumbing supplier to get a plumbed water filter. More $ >
Those of you responsible for this know who you are. Its not big and its not clever :-/. Ive made a note.

Also popped into a local small supplier and had a very helpful chat. Gave me few pointers on what to check (they supply and service Bezzeras). Things like rust inside, failing rubber seals, time to come up to pressure initially, and back to pressure after pouring. Anything else I should do?

Ive signed up for a course with the same local yokel - so next Friday I will be an expert :.

He suggested that a Eureka Mignon might be a good grinder to partner with the BZ35, if I do get it. They have them in store for $549 - pushing my budget again! I may be able to try for an enthusiastic customer discount if I get it on the same day as I do the course, and grab some beans too.... Any thoughts on it? Seems to have a decent reputation here.

When you can pick up a mint condition Bezzera BZ35 for a grand on the bay of evil, second hand does come into play at that price point.
Wow, thats cheap 0.o pity I dont have a spare grand kicking around (well, I do, but thats earmarked for a house deposit and/or the ATO (HECS is a bear) ).
