  • Make your own espresso machine

Hey so for awhile now ive been thinking about making my own espresso machine except I'm not sure how much I would have to spend to make it. If anyone can give me a rough idea on how much. Im intending on making a single group head, twin boiler

Well that depends on what you mean by "make" your own m/c ?
If you make it all , completely, then it wont cost you much more than raw materials..say $250,.. and your time ( lots)!
..but if you intend to "assemble" OEM parts that you buy from suppliers,....that could get very spendy..say $2500+ !

Maybe you could be a little more specific as to what you actually intend to do !..
    IE..
Will you make the boilers ?
Will you make the group head ?
Will you make the controls system ?
Will you make the frame & casing ?
    Etc etc

Materials are pretty cheap if you are starting from scratch. The expensive part is the machine shop needed to work the materials. Labour will cost you time.

I remember an episode of 'BIG' or something similar sounding. (The whole show is about making large scale working models of everyday items. Motorbikes, blenders...) one episode they made a giant coffee machine. Scaled from a home machine.

The end product worked after a fashion. Put hot water through ground coffee and steamed milk (lots of packets of preground coffee, tamped with the hand.) it won them a Guinness record for the largest coffee machine. Maybe they could have taken the record for world's worst coffee. The record representative didn't look too impressed when he tasted it.

Whilst they managed to make a functioning machine (it only had to make one giant cup full) something you made for yourself would of course need to be able to extract a good drop.

      And look good.

I was thinking of assembling as wont have much time to actually do it from scratch. I sort of want to mix some of the desirable aspect from some machines into others

Say I was to do it from the materials how much would you think that would cost?

I suspect that you will need very deep pockets to build from replacement parts. Because of the economics involved, building most machines (not just coffee makers) from parts will cost up to ten times a much as buying a brand new machine already assembled.
