  • I think the new filters are called the Claro Swiss Water Filter. Bing Lee and Harvey Norman seems to be the places which stock them.

I saw a 2nd hand combo listed for $500, the guy said its around 3 years old. Does this sound like a decent deal to people here? Anything in particular to look out for before committing?

This will be my first real coffee machine after having used a capsule machine for many years. I figure I'd jump on a half decent one to begin with which will last me a while before wanting to upgrade. Thoughts appreciated, thanks all!
OZBargain is today showing the BES920BSS for $711 (pickup or $39 postage) on EvilBay with code PRIORITY10. (under New Deals column on right side of page).
You also can find there a Breville BCG820BSS Smart Grinder Pro for $152 (free postage) with code P20MY at another retailer at the moment (ends 9/6/19).

Anyone use beanbay Ethiopian Harrar Longberry? Wondering what everyone have got their grinder settings at for these beans?

Any other coffee that anyone else recommends similar to the above mentioned including grind and unit settings. Finding it difficult to dial.in correctly.
Suss, Years past..when it was a staple from "MAO" (the late great Mohamed Ogsadey) it was very blueberry. I haven't had a harar in years, as they declined in quality due in part to Mr Ogsadey's passing and a few other factors. lets say it's still fruity. In that case decide if you want a "short double"..maybe 18 grams in, 32 grams out..sort of a ristretto. The grind can be a bit finer, to produce more of a comfort shot. What is your grinder, BTW? I have a Sette 270, and it seems to really like Ethiopian coffee, but roast light medium to medium, not full city. Once you decide on the brew ratio you'd like...say 1-2, or slightly less, start experimenting with your grinder. But remember, you do not want a fast flow with that sort of SO coffee. Try to get 5-6 seconds pre-infusion, the another 22 seconds. I HIGHLY recommend you pre program volume to assure consistency, once you have found your "sweet spot." You might also try a coffee like a Panama Elida DP...heaven in a cup. Hope this helps.

Ended up picking up the BES920 from this exact deal to go with a 2nd hand Rancilio Rocky grinder for $160.

Picking up both today - fun times ahead. Thanks all for the help, will no doubt have more questions comes coffee making time.

              • Hi fellow BES920 owners,

I've had my machine for almost 5 years and it's been a great journey we've had together but it's starting to show it age..

Hoping I can get some answers off some of the tech heads on here.

Have a crackling/buzzing sound when pressing any three of the brew buttons which I understand to be the solenoid valve on its way out.. I was making do with it until yesterday when the machine refused to brew. Refusing to push water through the grouo head, pressure gauge just sitting on 1 BAR and the temperature souring past 95 degrees.

Seems to be that the coffee boiler is emtpy and this was confirmed when I opened up the descale screw and no water and just a bit of steam came out. Left it to cool down overnight and this morning it's working fine again. Additionally there is condensation in the LCD screen and pressure gauges. Any thoughts?

                • After a naked portafilter. Does anyone know if it has to be a specific Breville one or would a 58mm of other makes also fit and work?

Has to be a Breville one, and if your machine is a 920 it must be for a 920 as the ones for the 900 don't have the notch cut out. There is one other brand that will fit but only if you take down the vertical height of the lugs on the portafilter with a grinder etc. Can't remember what hit is off the top of my head. The cheapest way to get a naked Breville portafilter is from Breville direct.

Sounds like you have an internal leak. Have you ever replaced the rubber o-rings that seal the plastic water pipes inside the machine?

Thanks for the response. Anyone got one can provide an idea of costs?

When I got mine it was a bit less but now I think around $80 plus postage

                            Interesting...
I wonder if Breville made "universal" portafilers now.

I checked the website. And both naked and non-naked 58mm portafilters are claimed to be compatible with BES980, BES920 and BES900.
Someone mentioned before prices gone up a bit too.

The part number for a naked one is BES058NPCRO. The price is $99.95 (lol, free shipping for orders over $100) This is Breville Australia.

I got my Breville naked portafiler over 5 years ago. Just checked the box and it says BES058NP. There is a chance "CRO" is model number states for "Chrome"

I was using mine with BES900 before. Now I am using it with BES920. I don't remember having any issues.

What differences between BES900 and BES920 portafilters you were talking about? There is a chance I applied too much force first time I used it on BES920 and "fixed" the difference.

                            • There is a notch cut out on the 920 portafilter that's not cut out on the 900 portafilter. The 920 works on the 900 but not the other way around.

                              900

OMG. OMG. I just realised I am using 900 one on my BES920. And it kinda works because I never pushed it further than the middle.

Thank you very much for your help.

Finally got a reason to buy angle grinder.
