  • The actual portafilter's role is just to hold the basket. Thats where the action is. Also of course bragging rights about exclusive and arty products but if it doesn't interfere with the basket, seals well and locks in then it really has no additional part in the extraction equation.

The choice of baskets is large too. I found the normcore double basket to be spot on in my earlier setup. I bought a Pesado basket but never got to use it. I went straight to an IMS basket with the leva and it is delivering in spades so I won't be trying others.

In traditional Espresso 15g seems to equal a double shot. In the end it all comes down to how much clearance you have in your basket / shower screen arrangement. That will determine your maximum in a basket.

    • Thanks for this thread with all the interesting history... I had BDB on my shortlist for a while, but (AFAIK) it's now very difficult/impossible to buy just the BES920 machine (possibly the cause of the 'discontinued' confusion). It's now always packaged as a 'Dynamic Duo' (MS) DBD plus Breville Smart Grinder combo, at significantly more dosh (model now BEP920, circa $1600). I have a grinder, so back to the drawing board!

I have read that the BDB being supplied as part of the Dynamic Duo package are also pre 2022 upgrade versions. (Might have been an overseas site where I read that?)

Just give it some time. Almost certain to be available for sale as a standalone item, and sub $1,000 at some point in the near future.
    Working...
