Re: Replacing a 3 way value on a Silvia
Hi all
Just to close finish up this thread I ended up getting a coffee machine repair place in on a home visit to fix my machine. I had suspected the 3 way valve and I was right. The solenoid that surrounded it had burnt out and the value was in the position where the pump wasnt able to deliver water to the group head. On could smell the 3 way after it was removed. The pump itself was fine.
So is now all working.
When I bought the Rancilio in the first place I liked it as it was simple. That payed off as being quite simple electrically and mechanically it meant the parts and labor cost to get it fixed wasnt much.

Re: Replacing a 3 way value on a Silvia
Hi
That URL to surewest.net on the circuit is fantastic. It shows me exactly what is connected to where and when. Also a good coverage of the 3 way value. I will have to have a more detailed look at the pages tomorrow night and relate that to the problem I have of the pump trying to run all the time but not pumping.
Thanks for the URL Robusto.

Re: Replacing a 3 way value on a Silvia
Hi
Yes, correct. Even if I disconnect the wires from the brew switch the pump comes on. Its also not pumping water either.
Thanks for that diagram, I was using one from a Randy Glass page.
Notice that there is an electrical connection from the pump to the 3 way value. The other connection on the 3 way is to the brew switch and to earth. I had the hot water switch, steam and brew switches all disconnected and the pump still ran. If the 3 way is stuck in the position where the pump is connected to earth via the 3 way then it would run and also maybe not pump. Im not sure exactly what way around the 3 way works.
I could pay heaps more of course for a professional to do a house call. $$$$

Re: Replacing a 3 way value on a Silvia
Speleomike.....
As mains is applied to the motor when the brew switch is on.... and the 3 Way is just across the motor circuit..... I doubt it is the 3 way..... more likely the brew switch or the hot water switch has failed... (or a wiring fault)

Re: Replacing a 3 way value on a Silvia
Speleomike, is my understanding of your problem right, that the pump is coming on without you pressing the brew switch? In other words, when its plugged into the power point and the power switch is on, the pump also comes on regardless?
Very odd indeed.
Here is a (long) link to a wiring diagram.

Replacing a 3 way value on a Silvia
Hi all
I need to replace the 3 way valve on my Silvia. I have found that this place has one
http://www.espressoworkshop.com/shop/shop137.html
but I notice on my Silvia that the space for the allen key to undo the screws is very small (~ 1.5cm) and I cant get any allen key that I have to fit between the value and the screw head to see what will fit.
Does anyone know exactly what size key is needed and maybe a part number for this as its probably a cut down length.
PS. The basic problem is the water pump comes on as soon as power is applied and I think the 3 way value is short circuit. From a circuit diagram this would explain the pump being on.Tags: None
