  • Help with my new Sunbeam 6910

Hi All, I am a brand new member needing some help. Four days ago I purchased a Sunbeam 6910 and have still not managed to get a cup of coffee out of it !!!!
Firstly, it is so loud that I took it back to the Good Guys store. They took it out the back and tested it and told me the loudness is normal. I cant leave cups unattended on it (warmer tray or under the outlet), it vibrates but has been stabilised.
Secondly, I was able to purge it on the first night but last night after taking it to the GGs I cannot get any water through it. It just makes the loud pump noise.

Has anyone any advice for me pleaseeee !!!!!

Yep the loud vibe pump noise is normal and will settle somewhat once water gets through. Make sure the water tank is firmly in place (give it a hit at the base with your palm to make sure) and then keep the pump going for as long as it takes to get water primed through and out the group head where you stick your porta filter and coffee (but do it without the PF in).....and if it doesnt ever prime then its a return job....but Im sure it will prime and will then be fine. The vibe pump is quite loud when getting up to pressure and gets quieter when pulling a shot....and I got used to the noise quickly.

    Cheers

Thanks again ozscott. The water tank went in about another cm. I now have LIFT OFF !!!!
I have steam, I have water (coming out in spurts) and it is coming out through the group head. Now I just have to learn how to make a nice coffee as I am a complete novice :-[.

                                 Again, thank you.

Just goes to show that there are sales people and there are people that know about coffee machines.

Too true. Now another question or two.
Do I need to purge the machine every time I use it? And can I leave it turned on all day?

            Regards

dippy1 you have been posting the same questions twice (in different posts).
Its quite confusing and not the done thing (netiquette).
Please use one or the other.

I have had no problem with mine it makes a lovely cup. Have you done the free coffee appreciation course? I can recommend it. They have your machine there to try and so you can compare and see if yours is faulty. :-)

Re: Help with my new Sunbeam 6910

Hi Dippy - you dont have to purge it every time. It will be right unless you run it completely dry of water - if so you would need to purge again.

You can leave the machine on - they have an advanced sleep mode type set up. It will go to sleep but leave some warmth in the thermoblock (brew head). You can wake it up by pressing one of the brew or program buttons. From memory it will turn off after about 24 hours - ie sleeps after a couple and then turns off after about 24.

You will really enjoy this machine. I would start by reading the manual - towards the back - about the programming. I would see how the espresso tastes, and if its not quite right up the brew temp by a couple of degrees and see (rarely it would need to go down under standard). If still not quite right - up again. I would definately set the steam to +10 degrees and .2 pump recovery to make the pump more frequent and the steam temp higher which will give HUGE difference in steam output and actually make it easier to get a whirlpool going in the milk and get good microfoam.

The big key to a good coffee is fresh beans and a good grinder - so what do you have of each Dippy? The standard tamper that ships with the 6910 is good enough to get going with for now, but consider a custom made one from Greg Pullman tampers which makes it easier to get consistency - again though the standard will be ok for a little while.

Look forward to hearing from you.

                      Cheers

Re: Help with my new Sunbeam 6910

To get the Vortex purge the steam wand for 30 seconds - that gets it really cranking. Then half fill the stainless jug that came with the machine. It helps if the jug has been in the freezer and the milk is really cold also. Stick the wand in the milk. Turn on the steam full, lower the jug as soon as you can so that the steam tip itself is only a few mms below the surface and at an angle to the milk surface of about 30 degrees and you will hear a gentle slurp slurp sound - have the steam tip in about the centre of the milk and if all is going well a clockwise vortex will get going in no time and you will be away....just remeber nice and steady dippy, becase if the steam tip comes out too far you will create massive bubbles and not nice tight little micro-foam ones.

Let us know how you go - practice the whirlpool making with water so the pressure is off and you can see whats what.

                        Cheers

Wow ozscott, thanks for all that info, I am going to print it out so I can keep it nice and handy. I dont have a grinder as yet, I bought a kilo of coffee from a coffee lounge, we went there for coffee and really enjoyed the flavour so I asked if I could buy some. He ground it for me. I will buy one later on, after I get the milk frothing right.
Thanks for that tip on using water to practice, I would never have thought of that. I am looking forward to the appreciation class next month.
Well, Im off to practice. Thanks again (heaps).
                          Lynn.

                            Hi Lynn,

Im not sure if you know that ground coffee goes stale within minutes of being ground. 1 kg is quite a lot of coffee to have preground (even if preground for you is a necessity as you do not have a grinder). Try find a boutique roaster that will allow you to buy 250 grams and will grind for you.

Hot tip: save up for a grinder....fresh is best as with everything else!

Hi after you have stemed your milk tap the jug on the table a few times to remove any big bubbles. After that swirl the milk in the jug to mix it slightly and give it good texture. You must purge the stem wand emmidiatly after stemaing to stop milk drying in the little hole. You also need to put the rubber cleaning disk in the group head and press the manual button, wait until the pressure guage goes up and then press the manual button again. do this 3 or 4 times at the end of each coffee making session.
