  • Quaha Napolitana overheating :(

Well... I came home tonight and went to make myself a coffee... turned on my machine & wandered away, same as always. My gf notices the machine sounds funny & opens the steam valve. Now at this point Id have been pleased had I been planning to steam milk & had the steam switch on, but unfortunately I wasnt & didnt.

Now its worth noting here that the boiler light had turned off. I assume this means the thermostat for steaming kicked in & shut it off, instead of the thermostat for normal temp :-/

I did try turning it off, turning it on & letting it boil until the boiler light went off (steam switch off), then hit the brew switch, and it just flowed steam until finally pouring water. Definitely overheated water

Does this sound like a reasonable diagnosis? Ill need to crack it open anyway, so Ill check with a multimeter (Yes, Im ok working with voltage), but it seems I need a new thermostat.

Now Ive typed all of that Im not sure what I was going to ask. I think Ive already figured it out. But since Ive typed it out theres no point deleting it :P
The big question is can I get the part I need, or will I be knocking on sponsors doors looking for a good price on a new machine? :

Hi Dsgfh, (If that IS your REAL name! :P)

It sounds like youre almost there yourself. At worst, you may be up for a new thermostat, as it sounds like one has fused open or shut. Youll be able to determine this easily with your meter. Its probably worth checking the steam switch for correct operation also while you have it open.

A thermostat is only a $10-20.00 part depending where you get it.

      Re: Quaha Napolitana overheating

Cheers Scotty. Ive emailed Alan Frew to see if he has the part. When he started importing the Combi again in April, it seems he also got a full set of spares. Im hoping Ill be able to get one by the end of the week & have it running again by the weekend.

The worst part of the whole thing is the 500gm of coffee sitting there getting older by the day while I sort it out I hope no-one wants to interact with me tomorrow morning at the office.

      Cheers,
      Michael

        Re: Quaha Napolitana overheating

Well Im a happy camper. Thermostat is sitting on my desk & if it wasnt for a meeting with a client this arvo Id be out the door & fitting it. With service/parts availability like that Id say the Napolitana still has life in her yet. Just a shame I cant justify an upgrade to the ministry of finance now. I reckon with the splitting headache shes had for the last 3 days I could have gotten just about anything past her.

          Hi,
I have a Nemox Napoletana, which im hoping has some similarites to your machine. It doesnt heat up. Im hoping its the thermostat also, Could you give me Alan Frews contact details please.

How do they come out. Does the boiler have to come out?

Phyatboy, no need to remove the boiler. It could be the thermostat, or it could be the heating element. Does the boiler heat up at all? For brewing? For steaming?

              Napolitana Earth Leakage

Im afraid its worse that I first thought. Our house doesnt have a safety switch, but before testing any further Ive gone out & got myself a portable RCD. Unfortunately plugging it in trips the RCD. A little testing shows it only happens when the elements connected.

              So... the question becomes:
              New boiler time?
              New machine time?

Either way, its french press time this week.

                    Re: Quaha Napolitana overheating

Unless both thermostats have failed at once--probably unlikely--sounds like the element has gone then.

A residual current device, also known as a saftey switch http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Residual-current_device

As I understand it, an earth leakage from the boiler is the most likely cause

                        Re: Quaha Napolitana overheating

I received a panicked phone call from my girlfriend one day when my napolitana would not heat up. I was grief stricken, as at the time it was only a few months old. I called Alan Frew,.. and he calmed me down, when I came to the realisation that it had to be a simple failure and easy to fix.

When I got home to try to diagnose the machine, nothing wrong!! Turns out the gf wasnt actaully switching it on,.. she was flicking on the brew switch as if it was power,.. then of course the power switch as the brew switch. It made all the right noises,.. but never got hot! FUNNY THAT! hahahaha
