    Yes my Silvia arrived today.

Have pulled 3 shots from it so far.

The first one was a disaster, hardly anything came out, a few drips in about 20 seconds.

I altered the grind to make it a bit coarser and for the next 2 shots got about 30mls in 25 seconds from the double basket. Tasted fantastic with plenty of crema, much better than most of the shots from my old Sunbeam.

The pucks were a bit wet so I need to work on my tamping and grind but thats part of the fun of it. Plus theres plenty of threads for me to look at again.

    Hi Gar,

Dont expect miracles overnight; you will slowly, but surely, develop more skill, confidence and consistency. The key thing is to just keep on pulling shots and having a go. At home, you dont get to pull that many shots in a row, so it takes a little while to build up consistency. If you are in Melbourne, I might be able to drum up some coffee for you to use purely to practice with (ie. a failed experimental blend or something like that). That way you can fool around without feeling that you are wasting money. Just send me a PM.

Its great that youre getting some good shots already!

    Cheers,

    Luca

    Good stuff Gar- enjoy!

If the pucks are a tad damp, bump the dose up a tad (consistently). Tamp should remain consistent at about 15kg.

Hope you are happy with the machine!

I was also saving up for a Silvia, probably for Christmas but when I saw the offer from 2muchcoffeeman for a new Silvia with PID, the urge was too great so I jumped in and bought it.

Im eagerly awaiting delivery which hopefully should be tomorrow.   I dont think Ill be leaving the house much on the weekend, hopefully I wont be bouncing of the ceiling too much from coffee overload.
Hope it turns up on time Gar....

Unlike my error which sent a VBM to Qld rather than from Sydney to Sydney metro on Monday- yours IS coming to you- directly : :-[...busy week last week

Hey greenman, great purchase. Just a tip to you for your machine and youll probably see the same thing repeated here around the boards but might I recommend that after using the steam on Silvia, make sure that you run some water through the grouphead. In that I mean, that you need to switch off your steam switch and flick on the brew switch for a few seconds. This will help to replenish the boiler and avoid any chance of it going dry.

    All the best!

    Hi Greenman
put it on a timer for 45 min to an hour ahead of when you want it. I have the Botticelli on at 6:15 am till 8:30 and again on at 3:00 pm till 7:30. Works well- have you seen this link:

    Re: Decided on a Silvia

Me again, I couldnt wait, I raced out and purchased Silvia yesterday and immediately set up and produced a decent espresso after half a dozen different grinds, took a while to sort out micro froth though, had to ring the shop and get a few pointers, but after that presto microfoam.
My wife is complaining because Silvia is not as quick and our old Via Venezia to heat up, but she will have to live with better coffee for many years to come.
    cheers

Hi Ben, I have been saving my pennies for a Silvia as well, only 2 weeks to go before the big day.
Ive been using a Saeco Via Venezia which has been making quite a good brew, but with the pressurised group its hard to get a smooth crema, its always bubbly, but still quite a good coffee, a hell of a lot better than the crap served up at most cafes around Perth.

    cheers

;D Well, Ive decided on a Rancilio Silvia espresso machine. Ive read too many great reports about this one and I decided to see one in action.

Coming from a Sunbeam Cafe Ristretto (which broke down after giving me more than a year of good service)

I was totally amazed by the quality of the short blacks and the milk texturing was phenomenal.

I loved my Ristretto, but Silvia just has great steaming, I was able to get decent microfoam without too much fiddling around, I had to learn the technique, but the short black was what I really enjoyed. Superb! Excellent crema on the coffee, I would say the crema was at least half of the entire shot. Very rich and velvety. I vow to buy one of these as I dont desire anything else for what Im after.

I have a Mini Mazzer and a coffee bean roaster which does a decent job. Now its just a matter of saving up a little and getting the Silvia to do justice to my quality coffee.

    Excellent choice Ben [smiley=tekst-toppie.gif]

FYI all, I spoke to the Melbourne importer yesterday....

There are a few of the older version (equally as good IMHO- perhaps preferable without the pod adaptable group) around and then thats it until new stocks ship...

Its looking like things are gonna dry up until mid-september. New stock will be at the increased RRP of $830- so expect street price increases of $40-50....
